2013 – 2014 NHL Playoff Predictions

Yes, we’re doing it again this year.  Making our predictions……

Western Conference

(1) COL v (WC) MIN

PB- I have a little bias on this match up. Two players on Minnesota decided they wanted to “go home” rather than come to a winner like the Red Wings. Expectations are a beotch eh Zach and Ryan? Seriously Colorado is a solid squad with youth and goaltending. In today’s NHL speed kills and with St. Patrick behind the bench they look like a good one to move on to the next round. Aves in 6.

King – I will start this prediction by laying out a fact.  I have no love at all for Minnie.  From the whole State of Hockey complaining, to the stupid logo, to their owner complaining about the high price of salaries WHILE signing two players for mucho bucks.  Now that I got my personal feelings out of the way, it’s down to opinion of this match up.  I personally believe that Colorado has over achieved this year.  Don’t get me wrong, I think they have a darn good team…just not that great.  That being said, I still think that youth will carry this team at least through the first round.  Aves in 5.

(1) ANA v (WC) DAL

PB- This one is a great matchup of a pairing that is really good Getzloff and Perry vs Benn and Seguin. They should be as advertized but I just don’t think Dallas has enough to spread it around where the waterfowl have more supporting cast members to take them to the next round. Ever heard of a guy named Selanne? The Mighty Ducks in 6

King – I actually like this match up.  Although Ducks had a little struggle towards the end of the season, I really like this team.  Dallas is one of those teams busting it’s hump trying to make the playoffs and has been in that mode for alittle while.  I’m going with the Ducks that are mighty though as I think they just have a tad bit better team.  Ducks in 7

(2) STL v (3) CHI

PB- This is going to be a hard one to figure this year. Chicago and St. Louis are both hurting with top players either coming off injury or are hopefully coming back soon. Both solid squads and hard working. Chitown has a couple of cups and plenty of playoff experience where the Blues are still figuring out their way through the world. I just hate to say this but the Blackhawks in 5.

King – St. Louis has just looked awful toward the end of the year.  They just have too many players not scoring and although high scoring games are not the norm in the playoffs…you do need goals to win. 5 goals in your last 7 games isn’t going to cut it.  St. Louis is one of those teams I would love to see advance..but I don’t see it this year.  Sigh Blackhawks in 5.

(2) SJ v (3) LA

PB- Wow an all Cali matchup! Now that worked out well for them as unlike in the past when the Wings were suppose to travel to and from Cali for a round or two. That said time to embrace the new NHL and this fine matchup. SJ has a well balanced attack but they have one major flaw in their program Joe Thornton. He has all the talent in the world but has never been successful in the playoffs. LA has a cup recently and plenty of size and speed to take over this series and a huge plus by the name of Quick. Kings crown the Sharks in 6.

King – San Jose…San Jose…when are you going to get a break and have a great playoff run?  I unfortunately don’t see it this year.  Quick seems to have bounced back from his injury prior to the Olympics and finished extremely strong.  Niemi doesn’t raise the same level of confidence going into the playoffs.  Could this be the place where Miller ends up???  Kings in 7.

Eastern Conference

(1) BOS v (WC) DET

PB- Great original six matchup for the first round. Boston is solid but somehow the Wings won the season series 3-1. Boston has a cup with plenty of playoff experienced players where the Wings and the youth movement seem to love the opportunity to play and show they are up to the task. This one is going to be one to go down to the wire and in typical fashion I see a couple of overtime games in this series. Boston is strong but I see the Wings pulling the upset in 7.

King-I know alot of people are expecting this to be the one upset this year.  I mean, as PB pointed out, they were 3 to 1 winners in the regular season.  They are very similar in play.  I on the other hand believe this is the year that the “new guys” from Detroit learn their lesson of what the playoffs are all about….Bruins in 6

(2) TAM v (3) MON

PB- Too bad that Montreal pulled the Lightening in the first round. Oh wait I think that was a good thing for them. The bolts lost their goalie to the dreaded upper body injury even though it looked like he was shot in the leg. As much as I really like Stamkos the bolts just don’t have Stevie Y lacing up the skates and Marty is now on the Rangers. Leadership is lacking but the Canadians have a huge thing working for them a little hot streak and a great goalie in Price. Montreal in 6.

King – Montreal has been my “meh” team of the year.  I think they’re alright, but haven’t really done anything to make me say wow.  I do like the pick up of Vaneck although in his last playoffs he was -7 in 7 games.  Tampa has that something this year.  Everyone said, “they’ll crumble” when Stamkos went down…guess what, they still won.  Everyone said, “they’re crazy” when they traded away St. Louis…guess what, they continued to win.  I pick Tampa in 7

(1) PIT v (WC) CLB

PB- Hey Columbus welcome to the playoffs for the second time in your history. The Pens will welcome you with a solid effort and flopping flower (aka Fleury) will tighten up and play solid. The most important thing is the Pens have a lot of firepower and I just don’t see the Bluejackets able to match that scoring ability. Pains me to say this but the non-flying birds in 6.

King – I’m not that crazy about this round.  I think that Pittsburgh is happy they pulled Columbus and not Detroit, but I’m not too sure about that feeling.  Something in the gut tells me this is the one upset that happens every year.  Bobrovsky scares me as it seems he’s on his game and this is the time to do that.  Call me crazy…Columbus in 7

(2) NYR v (3) PHI

PB- This is will be the most hard hitting of the series in both Conferences. The Rangers are solid and have plenty of leadership and playoff experience to boot. The Flyers started really slow but built a solid season behind balance scoring and plenty of grit. The biggest “If” is if Henrik Lundqvist can stand on his head and take over a game or two. I love both teams but the magic eight ball says Rangers in 7 with 3 overtime games.

King – Ohhhh, this is match up I can’t wait to see.  Most people wrote off the Flyers after their horrible start, but man..they picked up their play so much.  The Rangers look sharp, but something about them seems alittle off.  I’m thinking if Mason can play out of his mind…which is a stretch but doable….UPDATE: Mason is now unavailable with an “upper body injury.”  I will still stick with my pick, but it just became alot harder! Flyers in 7

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Tough Enough” Edition

Howdy folks, and welcome to this week’s edition of Five Thoughts. I’m Beermaker, and I’ll be your guide through this week’s review of the weird, wacky, and just plain dumb. First off, to answer a question… No. I was not on vacation last week. PB just wanted to write Five Thoughts last week, and I think he did a bang up job. So, with that out of the way… Let’s get started!

  1. Now, I’m still officially boycotting the NHL, but I never did stop being a fan of hockey. And having played the game, even at a recreational level, you gain a real appreciation for how tough these guys really are. It’s often said they’re the toughest pro athletes around. Usually that’s made in reference to guys playing with a broken jaw, or a big cut from a high stick, etc. Well, I’m here to tell you folks – it’s been done before in the past, but the gold standard of tough in the NHL was just reaffirmed this past week.  What is said standard? Well, let’s just go with the text from the article….
“The shot broke Campbell’s leg, specifically the right fibula. He stayed on the ice for 10 seconds, clearly in pain. Then he did something only a hockey player would do. He got up and killed the rest of the penalty off.”
Go ahead. Read that last part again. The part where we put the hyperlink. He finished killing a penalty. On a Broken Leg. For another 40 seconds. That deserves a video, and I think there’s one that fits perfectly…..
  2. Speaking of tough… For years, Ford Motor Company has used a tagline in their truck advertising, “Built Ford Tough”. Turns out, they may want to start using that line in the Mustang advertising as well. We all saw the devastation from the Tornado that tore through Moore,  Oklahoma. Suffice to say it was tragic, and horrible. It was not enough, however, enough to knock a 2003 Ford Mustang off the road. It survived a direct hit from an EF-5 tornado and kept running! The article is really worth a read.
  3. Changing gears a bit here… We all get crap in the mail. Junk mail, bills, advertising flyers, the usually. What we don’t usually get in the mail is actual, bona-fide, dog crap. But that’s what’s happening in a small town in Spain. When people let their dogs do what the need to do, and then don’t pick it up? The city does. And apparently mails it back to the owner as ‘lost property’. Hey, at least they aren’t leaving it on the front porch in a burning paper bag, right?
  4. It’s not often we get to include a PSA (That would be public service announcement in this case) here in a Five Thoughts post. But today we do. Just remember folks, you can steal the copper from the house, but if you steal and drink some of the beer you find there as well…. The police will find you.
  5. And lastly. Apparently today is National Doughnut Day. And what better way to lead into a new part of a theme part dedicated to the family led by one of the biggest doughnut lovers of all. One Homer J. Simpson. Universal Orlando has released pictures of the new Simpson’s themed area of their park. And it looks hilarious! Any one want to go grab a Krusty Burger? As for the link between Homer and doughnuts? It’s very well documented.

Okay folks, that’s five and I’m looking to get an early start on the weekend. In the meantime, I want to close out here with a song/video just for our very own Kingkielbasa. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the choice here today as he prepares to head across the pond. Nothing like a nice song from The Clash to get you going on a Friday.

Have a great weekend folks!

2013 3rd Round NHL Predictions

Sigh.  It appears that we really should stop having guest pick out winners for the NHL playoffs.  Here is the updated score sheet:

PB- 8 correct

King- 6 correct (for the record, I did pick the length of two of the series in the 2nd round)

Cigars and Scotch -9 correct

Western Conference (LA Kings vs. Chicago Blackhawks):

King-Sigh, although I did pick the Hawks to win in 7, I was hoping for a miracle.  It did not happen.  I do think Detroit scare alot of people in Chicago and showed the rest of the league that you don’t need multi-million dollar signings by a whining owner to play great hockey. (I’m looking at you Minnesota!)  I also believe when Quick is on his game, he’s one scary goalie.  He’s looked on his game lately. Wait….a message coming in….Dustin Brown…please put Shaw through the boards..signed Flippula.  Kings in 6

CigarsandScotch -[Holds envelope up to head] Food in the crown!

[Blows into envelope] The Hawks will take the Kings out to lunch!

Okay, the ‘Hawks escaped with their headpieces intact from the Wings and have some serious mojo working for them.  Sharp and Toews are coming around.  Add that jerk Hossa and his buddy Kane and the Blackhawk forwards are strong.

Crawford has been standing on his head as of late and he could be the difference in this series.

The Kings are just solid all around.  They are big, deep, and sound.  Bottom line, though is Quick. He carries this team on his back.  Unfortunately, it is not big enough.

Hawks topple the Kings in 6.

PB – This will not be as fun a series as the Wings v. Hawks. LA should not even be allowed to have a hockey team as 98% of that whole area does not even know who Eddie Shore is. I saw a lot of holes in the Hawks game but I will leave that to LA to figure out. Toews was being sucked off as a great leader by NBC against the Wings but showed he is not as mentally strong as other captains. LA has solid d-men that can handle the forecheck of the Hawks. Oh did I mention that LA has the best goalie in the league in Quick? This series comes down to both teams are happy the Wings are moving East next year. Oh wait that’s another topic (hee hee hee). Bottom line is both teams are solid but there is only one Quick. Dustin Brown smashes Andrew Shaw into the boards and takes out the first three rows of Hawks fans. Kings in 5

Eastern Conference (Boston Bruins vs. Pittsburgh Penguins)

King-I’m starting to believe there is someone with a sillier playoff beard than Crosby…Shaw from the Blackhawks.  Will Iginla be this years Hossa after turning the offer from Boston down to watch them hold up the cup? I’m not sure if Boston is that great or New York was that bad, but if they can win a series with Rask playing net as Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master……they are my pick.  I’m so sorry to Boston for turning my back on you.  Please Cam Neely forgive me and welcome me back into the family.  Bruins in 7

CigarsandScotch-[Holds envelope up to head] Cleaning their claws

[Blows into envelope] What the Bruins will be doing after this series

I am sticking with the Bruins all the way through this thing.  I think their aggressive forechecking style will really slow the Pens down enough for Lucic to stay hot.  Watch out for Marchand as well.

The Pens have Vokoun playing like crazy now, so if they can break the Bruins checking and out skate them, Vokoun will keep them in the game to let them score a boatload of goals.

Bruins squeak by in 7.

PB – One of my favorite teams in the Bruins because my youngest son thinks Seguin is awesome from his days as a Plymouth Whaler. ( Like the OHL reference?) Thing is Boston is solid on all four lines with no real “Superstar” that a team can key on. The Pens however were channeling their inner wannabe late 90’s Red Wings and put a collection of future HOFers for a Cup run. FYI I still think Crosby is a #ussy (Trying to keep it PG for ya King) Feel bad for Vokoun because Boston will crash the net hard and look out for Chara’s 100+ mph slapper from the point. Love Iginla but sorry to say the run is over. Bruins in 6 with all games going into 2 OT’s.

And since CigarsandScotch has had a stellar run in these predictions, I’ve got to give them their due.  Here’s a little message from them.

“Bring it, Ladies!  75% right last round.  Wait, what was that?  Didn’t we pick 75% in the first round as well?  Damn straight! Vegas is calling right now.  Gotta go.

Blatant plug: Dont forget to download the Cigars and Scotch Podcast from iTunes, Stitcher, or TuneIn Radio.”

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Magnificant Seven” Edition

Howdy folks, and welcome to another Friday post. I had hopes/plans to get something else posted during the week, but life and a nasty strain of the plague hit me. Enough about me though, let’s get to making fun of stuff.

  1. Wondering about the title? No, in this case it’s no reference to the movie (Which is worth watching by the way). It’s in regard to some lunacy that my co-blogger and I have been subjected to. Now, it’s no secret that we don’t hold terrestrial radio (That would be AM/FM) in very high regard. However, even lower on the pole are some of the people who call into sports talk radio shows. Like the ones this past week. The people who called in saying that a defenseman in the NHL hadn’t “given the team a deal at all” on his contract. That he “wasn’t worth that much”. These are the same people who said two years ago that he “should retire” because “wasn’t what he used to be”. Yeah, he isn’t what he used to be. He used to be a six time Norris trophy winner as the best defenseman in the NHL. He isn’t that anymore. He’s now the SEVEN TIME (in 19 years!) Norris Trophy winner. Congratulations to Nick Lidstrom, one of the all time greats to play the game. And as for that contract amount nonsense? Go here. Look at the list of names and salaries. Now, tell me the defending Norris trophy winner isn’t a deal at $6.2 Million.
  2. Sticking with sports, well.. I’ll let my IM to my co-blogger stand on its own here:
This is actually kind of sad… I know they’re much smaller rosters, but the way this fantasy draft gets into guys that were considered “just above average” in the top 100 say a lot about basketball not really having a lot of real stars….  (ok, it’s actually 120 players)
  3. I heard about the big celebratory dinner that the Dallas Mavericks had after winning, and now the sotry about the Boston Bruins has come up. My co-blogger caught this one and sent it along. It’s no surprise that when pro athletes (who are generally pretty darned well off) finally win it all, they party big. The story regarding the Bruins goes beyond big though. Why? Because someone got ahold of the receipt, that’s why. And it is EPIC. It’s posted at Fan 590 out ofToronto. Among the highlights? $180 worth of Red Bull. The lowlights? “Okay.. Who ordered an Amstel Light?!?!?”
  4. Sometimes, you get a freebie when posting about crazy stuff. This is one of those times. When the headline itself reads “Colo. police nab man accused of hiding in toilet” what more do you need to say? Of course, then you read it and see “Yoga Festival” and the line “A festival security officer says he chased a man who eventually emerged, but the suspect slipped away. The man was covered in human waste.” Yeah. I’m done here.
  5. Lastly, a story about the IT guy who got fired and retaliated by inserting porn pictures into a powerpoint presentation the CEO was giving. What’s that? You’ve heard this story a hundred times before? Well, yes and no. You’ve heard the part I just covered, sure. However, did you hear the part about the police searching the house for evidence in the hacking found home-made handgun silencers and materials to make more? Yeah, I didn’t either. Dude’s now up on federal felony charges for that. Yikes. I guess the moral of the story – don’t build your silencers at home if your hacking computer systems in a manner that will likely result in the police visiting your home. Or just, you know. DON’T make the silencers. That would work out well, too.

Ok, that’s five! Even if it was a little long winded today. We’re heading on out and we’re going to build on the movie theme again this week. No hidden quote this time though. This post shares part of it’s name with a movie. A movie opening this weekend has a character who shares a surname with a a guy in “The Magnificent Seven”. And it ain’t Yul Brynner. Who is it? It’s the guy she’s singing about.

Have a great weekend folks! next week you get a post from Kingkielbasa! Suppose I should let him know, huh?
-Beer

The greatest trophy…..

Well, I’m not even going to touch where our picks have been coming out…….
It is that time…….the Stanley Cup Finals…..the one thing that the NHL does right…..I’ll had it over to Beer for his pick to start:

Beer:”So its Boston at Vancouver for the Stanley Cup. I guess I’ll throw logic to the wind and just go on emotion. I tempted to go with the original six team. Tradition and all. However, Canada hasn’t had a cup winner since Montreal in 1993. So despite my having referred to Vancouver as a flawed team, I gotta pull for the Canucks.”

So, what’s my pick? That’s an easy one. I’ve got to go for the Boston Bruins. You can call my pick anything from wanting an original six team to win, to my mancrush on Cam Neely to the belief that Vancouver is not the greatest team that all of Canada wants it to be….I just believe that Boston will win. I think the D-men of Boston are finally gelin’, I think they believe in themselves but also realize that it’s a hard work trip and I just believe it’s time for them. I also don’t believe this round will be any different then any prior rounds….Boston in 7!

As a side note, since Beer is letting me run the show this time, I just want to say that no matter how much of a joke the NHL may be at times. It is still the best damn sport. I mean, any sport where a player takes a shot off the old nose and comes back to play…I mean, come on!

Yet, LeBron James played with a cold…BLAH HA HA HA HA!

Also, as I and others have made the comment about what a joke local sports radio talk shows have become compared to satellite radio programs….I’m sorry, but American shows covering the NHL can not touch the Canadians. Beer had sent me this link and I got chills just from watching it. I have posted it for all to enjoy. Have an awesome Stanley cup finals everyone….yes, history will be made!
