Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Throw it Together” Edition

Howdy folks! Welcome to this week’s edition of five thoughts. I meant to take notes this week, and have a bunch of fun stuff ready to go, I really did. Of course, you can all probably guess from the title how that all worked out. No notes. So we’re writing this one live! Hey, some bands are famous for their live performances! Yeah, not gonna aim for that though – besides… we’re a bit short on pyrotechnics here at the office. Anyway, on with today’s post!

  1. I see the King and PB got their picks up for the Stanley Cup finals this week. I’m still not watching, and was only vaguely aware of how was playing. I gotta wonder though… What happened to the guys from Cigars and Scotch? Did they get left out because they were beating up on the guys too much?
  2. Okay, I often post stuff “just because I can. And this might be one of those times. Or, some people might think it’s ‘cute’. I don’t. I think a 6 year old catching a massive tarpon is freaking awesome! I just have one question though… Did they have a tether on the little guy to keep him from being pulled into the water by that huge fish?
  3. Staying on, or maybe in this case, in the water… Another cool story popped up this week. It seems there’s an expedition that’s trying to find the wreck of the Griffin. The Griffin is a ship dating back to colonial times, that disappeared on Lake Michigan some 300 years ago. And folks, don’t let the name “Lake Michigan” fool you. It may be fresh water but it’s every bit as dangerous as an ocean.
  4. This one has to be from the “Where on earth to these people find the time to come up with this crap?” department. Apparently, someone got a burr in their saddle and decided to file a lawsuit to challenge the copyright of the song…… “Happy Birthday“. I’m telling you, you can’t make this crap up if you try!
  5. Lastly, what’s a Five Thoughts without a note about something automotive related?  And this week, we have one. I like to call it… “How not to treat a car that’s worth $400,000“. And for those of you who don’t want to bother reading it since you probably already guessed what happened? We have a video!  YIKES!!

Okay folks, that’s this week’s thrown together post and I’m off to enjoy what looks to be a nice weekend. Also – Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!
In the meantime, a little departure from some of the normal music. We’re gonna go with one that used to be in the tape deck of dad’s car growing up.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “It Should be Obvious” Edition

Howdy folks, and welcome to today’s edition of Five Thoughts. We’re going to go a bit literal today. As opposed to literary, which I don’t think we’ll ever be accused of. Anyways, since we featured so much food type talk last time, why don’t we see what’s cooking this week!

  1. Apparently they’ve never heard of the Heart Attack Grill. It could have saved them some time, and probably money. You see, a new study has shown that eating bacon and other processed meats can increase your risk of premature death. To these researches I say.. Wasn’t that already pretty obvious?” Also, isn’t it pretty obvious that people would prefer to die sooner WITH bacon, than live a long life without it?
  2. Again… I have to ask, “wasn’t it obvious?” It didn’t occur to a single person that printing bible verses on rolls of toilet paper might offend some people who were likely to make a big deal out of it? You thought people would just “roll with it”? (And, wasn’t it obvious I was setting up for a bad joke on that one?)
  3. it should be obvious… that being based around the remains of the Motor City, we pride ourselves on kind being car guys. Or at least fans of some of the classics. And it should also be obvious to the writers at Yahoo! that if you’re going to list “10 Iconic Hollywood Cars” and include the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit on the list, that car guys are going to spot the fact that the photo of a Trans Am you have shown is distinctly NOT a 1977 Trans Am. It’s the Tans Am that ran from 1979-1981.
Here’s the 1977-1978 Trans Am – notice the front end! (Thanks to wikipedia for the photo)

    Here’s what Yahoo! ran…

The sad thing is, the Yahoo! photo appears to be from a parade of Firebirds/Trans Ams. Which means they probably COULD have easily gotten a correct photo.
  4. And in news out of Florida this week (No, we’re not picking on Florida with this one), researchers tagged a fourteen and a half foot long great white shark weighing in at about 2000 pounds just off of Jacksonville. And after reading that said shark was caught and tagged in only 25 (!!!) feet of water, It should be obvious… It’s not safe to go back in the water! (You thought I was going for the bigger boat quote there, didn’t you?)
  5. Lastly, it should be obvious that we all hear FAR too much bad news on a daily basis. I suppose it’s a function of the 24/7 news cycle world we all live in. So, that being said… I personally think it should be obvious to be reminded every now and then that there are still decent human beings around every once in a while. People who do the right/nice thing.. just because they can. Like the United Airlines staff that held a plane at a gate for one passenger. So he could make the flight and get home. To see his dying mother one last time. Cheers to them.

Okay folks, it should be obvious that that’s five. And with that, it should be obvious that I’m ready to start the weekend. As one of my co-blogger’s reminded me, “It’s no Boondoggle” and it’s not, but it’s still a weekend, so I’ll take it. In the meantime, I’ll just keep thinking about being down in the Islands.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Jump, Jump Jump” Edition

Howdy folks, and happy Friday. Here we are at the start of yet another weekend, and Beer’s likely last post before yet another boondoggle (That right! You get a guest writer next week!), so what’s on the agenda this week? Let’s get started and find out, shall we?

  1. Let’s drop this one in right off the bat. This one went down last Sunday, so we’re just getting a chance to talk about it now, but Felix Baumgartner is the man. Period. End of discussion. When you jump from the edge of space back down to earth with only a parachute, you win. (See what I did there? “Drop in”? “Went Down”? Get it? No? Okay, nevermind.)
  2. Almost equally impressive, if possible, was the speed at which a Lego recreation of the Stratos jump made its way online. Impressive and disturbing at the  same time. Someone apparently has a LOT of Legos. And too much time on their hands.
  3. While we’re on the subject of jumps and jumping. There are jumps you want to see, and jumps you don’t want to see. And a 600 pound marlin jumping INTO the boat is definitely on the “Don’t want to see” list. Unless you’re watching it on the video.
  4. There’s some crude language at one point, so you might want to turn the sound down for this next one. But talk about a jump (Or more specifically, a cannonball dive) gone wrong
  5. Lastly, there was some jumping around last night. As you may, or may not have based on the near exclusive coverage of the losing team on national radio programs, heard about the Detroit Tigers sweeping the New York Yankees. When the game ended, there was indeed much jumping. And one spike. No, not a baseball spike. In a game decided by 7 runs, as the final out was recorded, Phil Coke spiked his baseball glove like a football. Yep. As they advanced to the World Series… the term to use was… Touchdown Phil Coke!

Okay folks, that’s five and I’m off to enjoy a (hopefully!) quiet weekend. See you after the boondoggle! In the mean time, keep jumping around!

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “More Than Five” Edition

Here we are on another Friday folks, and what a week it’s been. As a result, we’re going to suspend the traditional “Five Thoughts” format today. Why? Let’s get started and we’ll find out.

  • We have new champions in 2 major sports! Congratulations to both the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA and the Boston Bruins in the NHL!
  • That means the dog days of summer are here, sports wise. You’re pretty much looking at baseball for your weeknight sporting fix until fall. Not horrible, but not a lot of variety.
  • A great series in the NHL for sure, hard to beat a game 7. But for everyone out there who wants to refer to the finals this year as “Epic”? Ah, no. Go back and look at the average margin of victory in the Boston wins. Epic if you were pulling for Bruins, maybe. Too many blowouts to be an “epic” series, though.
  • What’s the feel on the NBA finals? Here at the office it seems to be “Very Good” including a game with a fantastic comeback by the Mavericks. Accurate read, or do I need to get out more?
  • We have LeBron James hate. I get it, people aren’t really fond of him. I thought the whole “Decision” thing was self serving and over the top myself. And some of the jokes have been funny, some over the top, and some awful. All of them got old really fast though.
  • Classy, paying for the parade in Dallas, mark Cuban. Times are tough all over and frankly, you can afford it. Still a classy move. Now the talk of getting players something *other* than championship rings? Please tell me that’s a practical joke.
  • We have riots in Vancouver. Idiots. All of them (The rioters, that is). They did it in 1994, too. Please tell me those aren’t your true colors as sports fans. Your team lost in disappointing fashion, yes. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t mean a hill of beans. You really need to think long and hard about that goalie situation you have though. Because his reputation is destroyed, his confidence may be too, and his un-tradeable contract runs damned near forever. Have fun with that.
  • We have more Weinergate. I’m not going to get into politics here, but seriously, dude. You Brett Farve’d a bunch of women, so let me explain. No, there is no time, let me sum up…  “Guys… NOBODY, especially women you don’t even know, want to be sent pictures of your junk!” There. Clear enough? Even though Weiner did “Brett Farve” a bunch of women, he did do something very un-Farve like. He retired. Ba-dump-bump! Thank you, thank you. I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.  (Okay, I admit it. I put that one in there just to set up that joke.)
  • We have this story about the US Mothball fleet. Just because I think it’s cool. (Note – I do not think sneaking into places secured by the government is cool. it’s a good way to end up in a bad place. I do think the photos and the history behind them are awesome though)

Okay folks, that’s more than five. So I’m good to go, especially since I managed to sneak in another movie reference in there somewhere.  And as for all those guys who just wrapped up the playoffs? Please. GO SHAVE! I understand the history of the playoff beard as well as anyone, but let’s be honest. By this point, those things are getting pretty nasty.

So, for all those players that need to shave… here’s something to shave by!

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The road to nowhere edition

Wow, Friday again already. I guess it’s a good thing when the work week breezes right by. Lot’s going on and lots coming up. It keeps you hopping. Here in the States, we’re coming up on Memorial Day. Now, it’s regarded a a lot of things – 3 day weekend, the official start of summer, the okay to wear white (I don’t get that one either) but the real reason is to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country. So regardless of your opinions of anything currently happening, think kindly of those who have passed on. Now, there’s one other thing that Memorial Day weekend tends to bring, road trips! And NO, I am not playing “On the Road Again”. We’re staying home, but I am going to roll out this week’s five thoughts.

  1. We’ve already established that I like lists. I especially like lists that include a number of the scariest highways to drive on. Best part is, I’ve driven a number of them already, and have a trip scheduled for another. Worst part? I think my daily drive into the office is scarier.
  2. It’s like a road trip, but with BBQ! Having been through this area, I can also joke that to some it may qualify for the scary highway trip. The food, outstanding! The article, timely. Although in all honesty, there should be one more stop on that trail. A stop at the cardiologist’s office.
  3. Don’t go down THIS road. Seriously, this is a public service courtesy of the Beerbarrel. Do not *ever* use a search term like “wild Asian ass” in a search engine to finish the crossword puzzle of your local paper. It will not end how you think it will.
  4. The road at the bottom of the ocean. A cool story about a lost, but mostly preserved city being explored. Underwater. You’ll need a bigger boat.
  5. The end of the road? Granted, they haven’t done a really noteworthy vehicle of their own in decades now, but it would be really sad to see another historic automotive brand consigned to the scrap heap in the sky.

And that’s five roadmarkers thoughts, so it’s time to hit the gas and move along. Where are we going? Nowhere.

Have a great weekend folks!
