Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Charcoal Gray” Edition

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all survived and enjoyed turkey day yesterday. I’ll do my best to keep it quick and light-hearted this week, in an effort to get finished up before I slip back into a turkey induced coma. So with that in mind, let’s get at it, shall we?

  1. Is it really appropriate to call today black Friday anymore? It seems to me that the name, which originally came from this being they day when brick and mortar retailers would see their stores reach the point of profitability for the year (Which would be shown in black ink rather than red for showing a loss), hence the name. With the sales starting earlier and earlier now, I just don’t see the connection anymore. Ah well…. maybe I’m just getting too old.
  2. It is now officially acceptable to not only have Christmas decorations up, but to turn them on at night in my world. And for the record the earliest official time it’s acceptable in my world occurs just after sundown on Thanksgiving. I think it goes back to when I was growing up, and we’d be watching the Cowboys game at grandma’s house. At some point during that game, Norelco would run an ad with Santa Claus using the top of an electric razor as a sled. And that came to signal that it was Christmas time to me.
  3. Now, I’m gonna say this up front. I didn’t go out shopping yesterday. We aren’t going out shopping today, either. But for everyone yelling about places being open and available to shop – deal with it. You’re in the minority. We live in a democratic republic, and people have voted… with their wallets. Maybe it has something to do with their being fewer shopping days this year. I don’t know. I know you won’t get me to go out in that madness, but obviously enough people will to make it worthwhile for stores to be open. So that’s that.
  4. On a more cheerful note if you happen to be from my neck of the woods – we got to see something from a group that works every single Thanksgiving day that we haven’t seen in a decade. The Detroit Lions won a game on Thanksgiving for the first time since 2003! And for that, I am thankful!
  5. Lastly, it’s not a post from me without some sort of random geek type news, and this one is no different. Again, these are here because I think a story about how a comet basically appears to have burned up while flying too close to the sun is cool. If you’ll pardon the pun.

Okay folks, that’s a quick five thoughts on black Friday and I’m off to get back to work. Which in this case means I’m off to make a turkey and swiss omelet. In the meantime, considering I did wake up to snow on the ground yesterday… It is now time to bust these out. After all, it did sorta look like a Marshmallow World.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “What the What?!?!” Edition

Hello friends it’s your friendly neighborhood PB bringing you this week’s Five Thoughts on a Friday. This week was a lot of fun with it being Halloween and all. Hope yours was not as soggy as ours. If you are wondering where Beer is well that is hard to say. Something about work and actually doing it to get paid or some damn thing like that, so here I am. Just like Huey Lewis and the News say working for a living right?

Let’s check out what we have going this week shall we?

  1. Like the title says this week is “What the What” and boy is this a doozy. If you wear a costume that says you are one thing, please don’t get arrested for doing it to someone else like let’s say your boyfriend. Just another example that alcohol can lead stupid people to do even more stupid things.
  2. Once in a while even in sports you can make a “What the What” moment. I have played various sports in my days and watched plenty more with friends but this one was truly a “OH HELL!!” moment. If you are a professional soccer player you know the rules buddy.
  3. This one is also from the ranks of too much alcohol can get you into places and situations that when you wake up you say “What the What?!?!?” I know that would be my reaction if I found myself being arrested as I woke up on the back of a horse
  4. This one is a story and non-story at the same time. The man at the center of this story has passed on. Good thing is they didn’t do to him like what he did to a dead whale back in 1970. How does this tie into the theme today you ask? He did what to what to a whale and it did what?!?! Thank you George for this moment most will never forget!
  5. This is what you don’t want to find when you are hunting ever. If you are in a tree stand and you shoot a deer wait a little longer to come down and check out your prize. If there is another buck hanging around and won’t leave when you come down, I would stay back and do not mess with that buck for sure!! Good thing these guys are quick.

Well folks that’s the Five Thoughts for this week. Hope you had a wonderful Halloween and received lots of treats and no tricks, unless you’re into that kinda thing. In honor of a ground breaking artist that passed this week we say thank you Lou Reed and see you on the Wild side.

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Weird, Gross, Painful, and Freekin’ Cool “Edition

Hello Folks! You guessed right it’s time for Five Thoughts on a Friday the PB edition. As you can tell from the title it will be the start of the annual October festivities of Halloween soon! I hope to entertain you and not in a scary way……..I hope. The bin is full of thrilling items so as Vincent Price said in a great 80’s song “It’s time for, the THRILLER!!!”

  1. This one is from the “Weird” file. I think we all at one time said I wish I could just disappear for a little while. There are even those times when in a fit of anger you may have said “DROP DEAD!” to someone you like or don’t like. But this guy takes it to a whole new level by wanting to come back from the dead? How does one handle it when a judge says “your dead honey.”
  2. This one is from the file marked “Cool”. For all of those kids that play with Hot Wheels cars love how they change colors this one is right in your wheel house. Sounds like they finally have it down to have your paint job change colors depending on the weather. TOO COOL!!
  3. This one comes from the file marked “Painful”. People tend to make mistakes when messing with drunk people. With that said doesn’t mess with a drunken lady with a hand grip like a vice especially when she is pissed off! Also don’t let her get a hold of the man parts because that will hurt! We all know how it ends when you start messing with Sasquatch
  4. From the files of “Gross” comes this dandy one. I don’t know what possesses people to do such things like not replacing the toilet paper roll when empty or let your pet stick its tongue in your mouth after knowing it uses it to lick parts on themselves. I still shake my head with at the thought of this. If you see something on the floor that resembles food and did not see someone put it there, why would you pick it up and eat it? I guess you can ask this TV weather guy and also enquire how the cat puke tasted. Yep you guess it he ate cat puke on LIVE TV?!?!
  5. Finally this is from the “FREEKIN’ COOL!!!!” file. Only in New York do they get such fun things happening. This one needs no introduction so ladies and gentleman………I give you………………..Sir Paul McCartney!!!!!!

Well all that’s that for this edition of Five Thoughts the PB edition. It is a wonderful sunny day here in Michigan so please get out and enjoy yourself. I feel a little old school Black Sabbath coming on. So in honor of the army getting closer to making this a reality, I know Ironman would be proud!

On behalf of Beer, The King and me PB, have a great weekend everyone!!

2013 2nd Round NHL Playoffs

What is the world coming to!!!  Maybe we should stop having guest picking series. Here is the outcome of the first round predictions:

  • PB- 4 correct
  • King- 4 correct
  • Cigars and Scotch -what the world…..6 correct???

I think something is wrong here, but to quote CigarsandScotch…”75% right in the first round!  Nailed the Western Conference and split the East.  Suck on that!!!”

So here we go with round 2:

(1) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (7) Ottawa Senators

PB – One of two 1 vs 7 matchups this playoff season. Guess what? I still hate Cindy Crosby  and think the team was more complete without him in the lineup. The Pens have a situation brewing if the Fleury meltdown is a sign of things to come. Vokoun is just good this could be a sweep but if he has a Fleury moment the Sens could take the series. Ottawa has something in the water up there as they have played well without their stars. Problem is…….well they are playing the Pens. I see this one as a tight series and sure will be entertaining for sure. Pens in 7 but I still hate Cindy!!!

King- So, I’m pretty impressed with the way the Sens handled Montreal.  I have to admit I didn’t see this one coming (obviously as you can see from my pick).  The bigger question is which goalie will show up for the Pens.  The one that stops pucks or the one that is ready for the gol season to start.  I’m also starting to believe in the power of the mustache.  I’m going against the grain here and I’m going Sens in 6

CigarsandScotch-The Battle of the Shortened Names, or the “Syd the Kid Media Extravaganza,” ends with a severe arse whoopin’ on the Sens.  They are impeached and sent packing. Penguins in 5.

(4) Boston Bruins vs. (6) New York Rangers

PB – Momentum is on the side of the team that won their game 7. UUummm well that would be both teams. The momentum is on the side of the team that finally found their scoring touch…..that would be both teams again. Damnit. Oh well both teams fought hard to make this round but I see one glaring problem in this series, Boston is almost bipolar. They are one team one night and another team the next. They have been really inconsistent and their pick up of Jagr well really has not paid off…..yet. Nash is good but he has never played this deep into the playoffs before and Boston has. Potential loss of Boychuk could be huge. Coin flip has Boston in 6

King – Living across the water from Windsor, which is no way near Toronto, I could still hear the gasp from the fans in Toronto about their team losing a game 7 in O/T after leading 4-1 in the 3rd period.  Yikes.  That being said, I’m not too sure I’m in love with the team the Bruins have become in the playoffs.  I’m no Rangers fan, but man, give credit where credit is due.  I didn’t think they had it in them to play good hockey and win the series against Washington. That being said, I’m going against my own heart and picking the Rangers in 7

CigarsandScotch- Old time hockey, coach!  Now we are talkin’.  None of this mamby pamby California-latte-drinking hockey.  This is what we call playoff hockey.  (Wings and Hawks, too!)  WE have big playoff beards and crushed cans of Hamms in the corner of the locker room.  Sticking with the original projection and taking the Bruins in 6.  (How can you not after they come back from 3 goals down!)

Western Conference Semifinals

(1) Chicago Blackhawks vs. (7) Detroit Red Wings

PB – One team is down right scary good this whole season. The Blackhawks have talent on all lines and they all contribute, two solid goaltenders, solid defense, and a coach that has won a Cup. That said the Wings have shown me something that I knew they had but they saved it for the playoffs and that is heart. Their best players needed to be at their best and they were. Howard is underrated in my opinion by those in the NHL so this is when he can make a name for himself and totally steal a series. I see this one of two ways it can go the way of the regular season and the Hawks sweep or they can go a tough 7 games. Split the difference and say the Hawks in 6.

King – Living in the Detroit market, I have to chuckle when the local fans were calling for Mrazek to be the starting goalie over Jimmy Howard.  I mean come on, Jimmy has played fantastic this playoff round and almost won it by himself.  He’s going to need to be that good or better for the Wings to make it through this round.  Although all games this season except for the Easter massacre was decided by overtime or shootout, I pick the Blackhawks in 7

CigarsandScotch-Ok, here is what is going to happen: Quenneville threatens his team by stating that he will “shave the stache'” with Stan Makita’s ’61 skates.”  The team rallies behind this threat.  The Wings respond with threats of limo rides down Woodward with Mr. Illitch at the wheel.  Hawks in 6.

(5) Los Angeles Kings vs. (6) San Jose Sharks

PB – Did the Sharks play in the first round? I didn’t even notice. They didn’t even break a sweat against the Canucks. I think they brought Jamie Baker out of retirement to score on the Canucks. The Kings proved they are still a tough hard nosed team that can grind out another cup if they keep this up. I don’t see a fun time for the Sharks in this battle of California. Just waiting for Joe Thornton to go all Joe Thornton and have one hell of a series…..NOT!! The Kings are solid and I see changes coming to the Sharks this off season. The Kings channel their inner purple sweaters and take this one and the Sharks don’t even know what hit them. Kings in 5

CigarsandScotch-The Battle of Cali! This is absurd.  California teams battling it out in the Stanley Cup playoffs.  Cats and Dogs sleeping together!  Mass Hysteria!  Sharks upend the defending champs in 6.

King- Seriously, did anyone think the Sharks were going to handle the Canucks the way they did?  I mean, I knew that that series was going to be a snoozer, but come on…  The Kings on the other hand remembered what it took to be winners and showed the Blues.  I’m hoping Quick learned his lesson about puck handling and plays like he did at the end of the series.  Kings in 6

There you have it folks.  I’m personally hoping I do a better job this round.  Also, it’s only fair since he had a great 1st round I leave you with another quote from Cigars and Scotch…

“Listen to Cigars and Scotch podcast or I’ll be bringing those Quenneville clippings over to your house for Sunday brunch!”

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Day of Many Titles” Edition

Howdy folks! Beer’s back from yet another boondoggle to bring you this week’s edition of Five Thoughts. A big thank you to PB for filling in for me last week while I was out of town. I came back with an idea of what I wanted to call this week’s post, and then life decided to trow even more ideas at me – until I had more titles for this post than I could use. And that’s how we landed where we did. So, what’s going on today? Well, let’s find out!

  1. A lot going on here in town today as it’s the home opener for the Detroit Tigers. The home opener is virtually a holiday here. Always a huge crowd at the ballpark, and an even bigger crowd downtown outside the ballpark. And that’s great for the team, great for the city, great for almost everyone. One person lost out today though. Last night a young man from the University of Detroit won the NCAA college basketball slam dunk competition. And while Yahoo Sports has a story on it, it was nowhere to be seen on the front pages of the local Detroit paper sites. So I’m putting it here. Because I can.
  2. On a completely different note – I saw this story in the news lately. Talk about a company bound and determined to put itself in bankruptcy. After everything that’s gone wrong lately, when I read a headline that says “Crews corral cruise ship that tore loose“, I could only think of one cruise line. And yep, if you said Carnival you would be correct. I think people would be more willing to cruise on the Exxon Valdez if it were still around than they would be to get on a Carnival cruise at this point.
  3. Staying on the water for a moment. You aren’t gonna need a bigger boat this time. You might however, just give up on going in the water altogether. Especially when you see the nearly 7 foot long, 102 pound barracuda this guy caught. Barracuda are bad news at 10-20 pounds. At 100? Eek. Come to the great lakes folks – our fish don’t (and aren’t capable of it) try to eat you!
  4. Slowly but surely, and despite the massive ice flows I saw on the Straights of Mackinac last weekend all the signs of spring are slowly arriving. The robins are back, baseball is back, and I’m getting the annual hot rod bug. And seeing that ‘Eleanor‘ from “Gone in 60 Secondsis going up for auction certainly isn’t helping.
  5. Lastly, since I just love ‘news of the odd, I have to include this one. Of course, sometimes the odd stuff can be a bit scary. Or hairy. Or in this case, both. Now, what could be both? How about a large species of tarantula, roughly the size of an adult human face? Yeah. That’s what I thought, too. To anyone who has a real fear of spiders? Sorry about the nightmares. You um…. might want to avoid Sri Lanka.

Okay folks, that’s five and I’m off to enjoy the opening day festivities. And really, given the events of today, there’s only one song to go with. I just wish I was sitting out there in Centerfield.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Latest Snowpocalypse” Edition

Happy snowy morning everyone. Yep, it’s another Friday, and that means another edition of Five Thoughts, and here lately – another big snowstorm. It’s been a great week though, so I’m not gonna get a little snow and cold get me down. And with that in mind, let’s get started!

  1. Speaking of being down, I know this won’t surprise anyone who’s even remotely local, but Detroit was just named to the number one spot on a Forbes list! Of Miserable Cities. Like I said, it’ll be no surprise to any locals.. What’s that? It wasn’t a commentary on the city government? Really! Well, it still a pretty accurate ranking.
  2. In the meantime, Michigan’s state government is looking to tackle the tough issues. It seems they’re finally getting around to going after those notorious criminals, Kramer and Newman. That’s right you two. The state’s on to your little bottle return scam!
  3. Being the age that I am, it’s not uncommon for me to reference things from the 80s or 90s. One thing I generally don’t bring up, or even worse, try to bring back is the fashion. Sadly, I may be alone in that. It would appear that one of the worst of the 1990s fashions is trying to make a comeback. Yep, I’m talking overalls. Hmm… I wonder if Tim from Moonshiners has anything to do with it?
  4. This one ended up being one of my favorite stories of the week. On Monday, Burger King’s twitter account was hacked. On Tuesday morning, the company that handles social media for Jeep posted an article about how to avoid being hacked. 15 minutes later, Jeep’s twitter account was hacked. I haven’t checked the site lately to see if they’ve posted a “How not to tempt fate” article yet.
  5. Lastly, from the “You’re not real bright, are you?” department… It seems that there’s an organization that’s battling a rash of employees using work issued electronics for inappropriate communications. Yep, ‘sexting’ basically. Now yes, I know it probably happens everywhere to an extent. And there are people who ‘think’ they probably know ways around it. But when it’s happening at the organization that’s gets involved in investigating a lot of these cases… well.. “You aren’t real bright, are you?”. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the F B I.  (I wanted to use this quote – but I couldn’t find a video of it). This one still seems appropriate though. We’re gonna need some more FBI guys.

Okay folks, that’s five and I’m out of here. Time to stare out the window at the snow let the knowledge of my recently scheduled boondoggle keep me warm. Yep, before long it will be Boondoggle time again. Hello, Montego Bay!

Have a great weekend folks!

Happy Halloween (a rerun?)

Happy Halloween everyone!  Because of the holiday, I wanted to write a quick post about the holiday, but as Beer knows…I’m too lazy.  So I began to wonder, if TV shows can get away with…can you rerun a blog?  Then I figured, nah..that’s too cheesy…so I decided to do like some of the old cartoons and three stoogies episodes…I’ll splice some old content with a bit of new and call it a new blog!

Here are some tips for the Halloween Trick or Treaters tonight:

* If you’re holding hands with anyone but your parents or grandparents while treat or treating….you’re probably too old.

* If you’re talking on a cell phone while coming up to my door holding out your bag…you’re probably too old to trick or treat.

* If you have boobs that would make a super model jealous and they aren’t balloons or another fake item…you’re probably too old to trick or treat.

* If your costume consist of a basketball jersey and a basketball…you’re probably too old to trick or treat.

*If your brother/sister is sick or grounded and you were carrying a bag for them….they probably shouldn’t get any candy for a reason.

*If you’re going to put up a huge halloween display weeks before, you probably want to actually be there to pass out candies on the actual day.

*I get it if you don’t believe in the holiday, no worries, but to leave your light on and trick the kids into coming to hear the “word”….wrong.

*I also get it if your neighborhood is so bad that you have to take your kids somewhere else so they can be safe. But come on…..park the car and walk with them! This driving along side of the road as they go house to house is cheesy.

*Finally, in these tough times, I get the buying the cheapest candy possible. I also get that you are only giving out one piece of bubblegum as a treat. I just want to thank those people that go against the grain and actually still give out bags of potato chips….You guys are awesome!

Now I’ll leave you with a bit of Detroit Nostalgia:
