2013 – 2014 NHL Playoff Predictions

Yes, we’re doing it again this year.  Making our predictions……

Western Conference

(1) COL v (WC) MIN

PB- I have a little bias on this match up. Two players on Minnesota decided they wanted to “go home” rather than come to a winner like the Red Wings. Expectations are a beotch eh Zach and Ryan? Seriously Colorado is a solid squad with youth and goaltending. In today’s NHL speed kills and with St. Patrick behind the bench they look like a good one to move on to the next round. Aves in 6.

King – I will start this prediction by laying out a fact.  I have no love at all for Minnie.  From the whole State of Hockey complaining, to the stupid logo, to their owner complaining about the high price of salaries WHILE signing two players for mucho bucks.  Now that I got my personal feelings out of the way, it’s down to opinion of this match up.  I personally believe that Colorado has over achieved this year.  Don’t get me wrong, I think they have a darn good team…just not that great.  That being said, I still think that youth will carry this team at least through the first round.  Aves in 5.

(1) ANA v (WC) DAL

PB- This one is a great matchup of a pairing that is really good Getzloff and Perry vs Benn and Seguin. They should be as advertized but I just don’t think Dallas has enough to spread it around where the waterfowl have more supporting cast members to take them to the next round. Ever heard of a guy named Selanne? The Mighty Ducks in 6

King – I actually like this match up.  Although Ducks had a little struggle towards the end of the season, I really like this team.  Dallas is one of those teams busting it’s hump trying to make the playoffs and has been in that mode for alittle while.  I’m going with the Ducks that are mighty though as I think they just have a tad bit better team.  Ducks in 7

(2) STL v (3) CHI

PB- This is going to be a hard one to figure this year. Chicago and St. Louis are both hurting with top players either coming off injury or are hopefully coming back soon. Both solid squads and hard working. Chitown has a couple of cups and plenty of playoff experience where the Blues are still figuring out their way through the world. I just hate to say this but the Blackhawks in 5.

King – St. Louis has just looked awful toward the end of the year.  They just have too many players not scoring and although high scoring games are not the norm in the playoffs…you do need goals to win. 5 goals in your last 7 games isn’t going to cut it.  St. Louis is one of those teams I would love to see advance..but I don’t see it this year.  Sigh Blackhawks in 5.

(2) SJ v (3) LA

PB- Wow an all Cali matchup! Now that worked out well for them as unlike in the past when the Wings were suppose to travel to and from Cali for a round or two. That said time to embrace the new NHL and this fine matchup. SJ has a well balanced attack but they have one major flaw in their program Joe Thornton. He has all the talent in the world but has never been successful in the playoffs. LA has a cup recently and plenty of size and speed to take over this series and a huge plus by the name of Quick. Kings crown the Sharks in 6.

King – San Jose…San Jose…when are you going to get a break and have a great playoff run?  I unfortunately don’t see it this year.  Quick seems to have bounced back from his injury prior to the Olympics and finished extremely strong.  Niemi doesn’t raise the same level of confidence going into the playoffs.  Could this be the place where Miller ends up???  Kings in 7.

Eastern Conference

(1) BOS v (WC) DET

PB- Great original six matchup for the first round. Boston is solid but somehow the Wings won the season series 3-1. Boston has a cup with plenty of playoff experienced players where the Wings and the youth movement seem to love the opportunity to play and show they are up to the task. This one is going to be one to go down to the wire and in typical fashion I see a couple of overtime games in this series. Boston is strong but I see the Wings pulling the upset in 7.

King-I know alot of people are expecting this to be the one upset this year.  I mean, as PB pointed out, they were 3 to 1 winners in the regular season.  They are very similar in play.  I on the other hand believe this is the year that the “new guys” from Detroit learn their lesson of what the playoffs are all about….Bruins in 6

(2) TAM v (3) MON

PB- Too bad that Montreal pulled the Lightening in the first round. Oh wait I think that was a good thing for them. The bolts lost their goalie to the dreaded upper body injury even though it looked like he was shot in the leg. As much as I really like Stamkos the bolts just don’t have Stevie Y lacing up the skates and Marty is now on the Rangers. Leadership is lacking but the Canadians have a huge thing working for them a little hot streak and a great goalie in Price. Montreal in 6.

King – Montreal has been my “meh” team of the year.  I think they’re alright, but haven’t really done anything to make me say wow.  I do like the pick up of Vaneck although in his last playoffs he was -7 in 7 games.  Tampa has that something this year.  Everyone said, “they’ll crumble” when Stamkos went down…guess what, they still won.  Everyone said, “they’re crazy” when they traded away St. Louis…guess what, they continued to win.  I pick Tampa in 7

(1) PIT v (WC) CLB

PB- Hey Columbus welcome to the playoffs for the second time in your history. The Pens will welcome you with a solid effort and flopping flower (aka Fleury) will tighten up and play solid. The most important thing is the Pens have a lot of firepower and I just don’t see the Bluejackets able to match that scoring ability. Pains me to say this but the non-flying birds in 6.

King – I’m not that crazy about this round.  I think that Pittsburgh is happy they pulled Columbus and not Detroit, but I’m not too sure about that feeling.  Something in the gut tells me this is the one upset that happens every year.  Bobrovsky scares me as it seems he’s on his game and this is the time to do that.  Call me crazy…Columbus in 7

(2) NYR v (3) PHI

PB- This is will be the most hard hitting of the series in both Conferences. The Rangers are solid and have plenty of leadership and playoff experience to boot. The Flyers started really slow but built a solid season behind balance scoring and plenty of grit. The biggest “If” is if Henrik Lundqvist can stand on his head and take over a game or two. I love both teams but the magic eight ball says Rangers in 7 with 3 overtime games.

King – Ohhhh, this is match up I can’t wait to see.  Most people wrote off the Flyers after their horrible start, but man..they picked up their play so much.  The Rangers look sharp, but something about them seems alittle off.  I’m thinking if Mason can play out of his mind…which is a stretch but doable….UPDATE: Mason is now unavailable with an “upper body injury.”  I will still stick with my pick, but it just became alot harder! Flyers in 7

And It’s the Hawks!

After 49 years, the Blackhawks have hoisted the Stanley Cup again.

As for us? Well, we finally both got it right for once. We had picked the Hawks to win it. Hey, we had to get one right eventually, didn’t we?

With that, the silly season can now begin. Next year officially becomes “This Year”, and the whole thing starts over. So who will be the teams to watch (in the offseason)? Hard to say.

  • Chicago – The defending champs always bear watching. Even if it’s just to see what crazy things they do with the Stanley Cup.
  • New Jersey – Still haven’t hired a coach but, they’re the Devils. They can be a machine at times.
  • Phoenix – The fact they they were a good team this year gets lost in the fact that the ownership situation down there is, to be charitable… A train wreck. That train wreck is of course, why we have to keep watching. Can’t look away.
  • Pittsburgh – No longer the defending champs. Still very young and talented though. But rumors of a big name like Malkin being moved have started to surface. (Chicago, with a bunch of good young players should watch this too. It could happen to them before long). Does it actually happen? We’ll find out.
  • Tampa Bay – New owner, new GM, new coach. Watch to see who stays, who goes, and maybe mostly importantly… who they bring in.
  • Carolina – Strange things are afoot, with the owner looking for a partner to take a minority ownership stake. In the meantime, they’re cutting payroll well below the salary cap. You never want to hear that as a fan.

Those are just a few of the teams that jump out to me as I write this. Of course, as the off season progresses things can change fast. Two weeks ago, I’d have probably put Detroit on the list, but they got Lidstrom and Holmstrom signed, and now it looks like they’ll be pretty quiet. Will Atlanta make some noise? They usually don’t, but time will tell.

Later folks!

The NHL Playoffs – Stanley Cup Finals Edition!

Well folks. Here we are. The NHL Stanley Cup finals.

Last night, Philadelphia beat Montreal 4-2 to advance to the finals where they will face the Chicago Blackhawks (who swept the San Jose Sharks). So much for me wanting an Original six final.

For the record, the picks for the conference finals were:

Beer: Chicago/Montreal
King: San Jose/Montreal

We do feel the need to apologize to Montreal. We hadn’t picked them at all until the conference finals, and that pick came with the following warning: King:  Just that this guarantees Montreal’s failure since we’ve never picked them until now.” Sorry about that one, Habs.

Anyways, the picks for the Finals!

Beer: Chicago. I’ve been saying since they swept the sharks that by rights, they should mop the floor with whoever came out of the east. Well, now we know it’s Philadelphia. I expect the Flyers will make it tough but fall in the end. The Blackhawks are going to bring home Stanley.

King: Blackhawks, they seem to be following the plan. Last year, conference finals to lose to rival. Old school team…..make it this year after a little trouble in the first round.

So there you have it folks. We’re voting Blackhawks. (Now watch the Flyers somehow win!)

Enjoy the games!

The NHL Playoffs – Conference Finals

And then there were four. The difference between the East and the West? As big as possible. A fan’s dram or nightmare, depending on your point of view.

Prince of Wales Conference Finals (Eastern Conference)

(7) Philadelphia versus (8) Montreal
Yes, you are reading that correctly. It’s the two BOTTOM seeds in the east. Montreal has been busy playing giant killer, beating Washington and Pittsburgh. Philadelphia had been the quieter of the two, just moving along and beating Buffalo and then grabbing everyone’s attention by coming back from being down 0-3 against Boston.

Clarence Campbell Conference Finals (Western Conference)

(1) San Jose versus (2) Chicago
Standings wise, the polar opposite of the East. The top two seeds have advanced to the conference finals in the West. Chicago makes a return trip (They lost to Detroit last year in a tough series reminiscent of the old Norris Division days) while San Jose is shedding their “playoff underperformers” label.

The picks! (This was a real time discussion between Beer and the King)

Beer: I’m not even going to justify my picks with logic. I want old school. I want tradition. I want an original six matchup in the Stanley Cup finals for the 1st time since 1979. I want to see Chicago and Montreal. That’s my pick.

King: I would like to see Chicago/Montreal, but believe it’s going to be  San Jose versus Montreal in the Cup finals. One versus Eight.

Beer: Anything you’d like to say in the post beyond what you just did?

King:  Just that this guarantees Montreal’s failure since we’ve never picked them until now.

So there we go. Beer goes with Chicago/Montreal while King goes San Jose/Montreal. Let’s see what happens!
(Note: As of this post, Chicago is up 1-0 on San Jose and Philadelphia is up 1-0 on Montreal)

The NHL Playoffs, Round 2 – How’d we do?

For the record, our picks can be found here. I think the title of that set of picks sets the tone quite nicely considering the results.

In the East we had:

(4) Pittsburgh versus (8) Montreal
We both had Pittsburgh beating Montreal, and once again, Montreal comes up with the upset. They’ve now offed both the top seed overall in Washington, and the defending Stanley Cup champs. Nice work if you can get it.  (For the record, neither of us has picked the Habs yet, and they keep winning.)

(6) Boston versus (7) Philadelphia
We both had Boston winning this one. We’re both in agreement here, too. When you not only blow a 3 games to 0 series lead, but lose game 7 by blowing a 3-0 lead??? Folks, we need to channel Comic Book Guy here. Worst. Choke. EVER.

In the Western Conference:

(1) San Jose versus (5) Detroit
Detroit bows out in 5 games, surprising since it looked like they had found their stride in Game 7 against Phoenix. All but one game was decided by one goal. In the end, the Sharks do what the top seed in the conference is supposed to do to a 5th seed. Beat them. Quickly. And they did. Score one for the King as he fought off his inner homer to get the pick right. Beer is still sitting with the goose egg.

(2) Chicago versus (3) Vancouver
In the battle of 2 versus three, we have Chicago moving on. Much like the Sharks, the Blackhawks flat out took care of the business they were supposed to and as a result, they advance to the Western Conference finals for the second year in a row.  Beer gets on the board, and the King moves to .500 for this round.

Final tally?

Beer – 1 for 4  (Ouch!)
King – 2 for 4

All in all, it looks like our effort to embarrass ourselves further was a success. Do we dare pick the finals? Sure (Even though we’re tardy on the post and they’ve already started). Stay tuned for that here later today!

Take care folks

The NHL playoffs… How’d we do?

Well, the 1st round of the NHL playoffs is over. How’d we do with our Beerbarrel picks? Let’s take a look!

Out East, here’s what we said:
Washington (1) vs Montreal (8):
Beer: When in doubt, pick the Habs! That used to always be the safe bet. I’m not in doubt here though. Caps win and move on.
King:  I have chosen my mancrush as the grand winner this year so I’m going to have to go with King Ovie’s team Washington.

Annnnd…. We both got clobbered on this one. Washington chokes away a 3-1 series lead and loses to the 8th seeded Habs in 7 games. Ouch.

New Jersey (2) vs Philadelphia (7):
Beer: Every season, it seams like there’s a first round upset. This is not it. Devils advance.
King: Sorry Phillie, gotta go with the Devils on this one.  I don’t think they’re a great team, but believe they are the better team in this match up.

Can you tell we really didn’t have a good feel for this one. Flyers in 5 games over the Devils, who lose their coach the very next day as he retires.

Buffalo (3) vs Boston (6):
Beer: This could well be the one. I’m on the fence with this one, but I’m playing the odds and going with the Sabres on the strength of Ryan Miller alone. But you have been warned.
King: Got to go against my brother from another mother on this one.  I believe Boston, although having a horrible year, will be one of the better playoff teams. Plus…CAM NEELY WAS MY IDOL..GO BRUINS! (I guess he’s picking Boston, huh?)

Maybe that shrine to Cam Neely that the King keeps actually works. Bruins win.

Pittsburgh (4) versus Ottawa (5)
Beer: Call it a gut instinct. No, I don’t have it in for the Pens. Despite the merciless over-hyping of Sydney Crosby, I actually like the Penguins. I just think they’re about to find out how rough the defending champs can have it in the playoffs and get earlier tee times than a lot of people think. Senators are the pick here.
King: Sheez….and I was the total Sid the Kid hater of the two of us.  As much as I predicted at the end of the playoffs last year that Pitt wouldn’t get past the first round…And as much as I actually love the Sens ( got an old beat up hat in my closet to prove my fandom)…AND as much as I hate the NHL bending over backwards for the Pens…..Sigh, I pick the Pens.

Sydney Crosby lit this one up. He did what good players need to do this time of year, and the Penguins advance (And are suddenly the highest seed left in the Eastern Conference).

So the final tally of our Eastern Conference picks? King goes 2 out of for, and Beer shows why he never actually bets on sports with the big old goose egg in the “got it right” column.

And in the West:
San Jose (1) vs Colorado (8):
Beer: The Sharks, perennial playoff underachievers, versus the Avs, a shadow of a once dominate team. I really can’t find much reason to want to watch this one, and I like the Sharks for the most part. Sharks move on.
King: ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…oh wait, was that a series….Avs, just based on the fact that the Sharks are doomed for a first round exit every year.

Beer finally gets one right as the Sharks advance. King found inconsolable.

Chicago (2) vs Nashville (7):
Beer: If a team from Nashville pulls an upset and nobody in Nashville notices, does it really happen? I’m not convinced it’ll happen, but it’s a gut feel with no logic. And that’s how I’m picking them. That’s right. I picked the Preds.
King: There are only two teams that I hope never win the cup again and Chicago is one of them. I think the Preds are actually a pretty decent playoff team and will scare if not upset a few teams.  I’m with Beer on this one, Preds.

Yeah, about those upset picks…..

Vancouver (3) vs Los Angeles (6):
Beer: Roberto Luongo has an Olympic gold medal. That seems to make people forget that he also has a near meltdown as a playoff goalie on his resume (last year). All the same, the Canucks move on in this one.
King: This one I’m just picking on who I’d like to see.  I’ve been a fan of the Kings all season so I’m hoping and picking the Kings.

Beer gets another one right! King picked the Kings, that at least has be be worth a laugh for the play on words, right?

Phoenix (4) vs Detroit (5):
Beer: I have no idea on this one. You have Detroit (my hometown team – even when I lived out of state) against the former Winnipeg Jets (I just like that name better). There’s so many storylines here it’s crazy. The Wings comeback to make th playoffs, the NHL owned Coyotes. And really, if you’re the NHL – aren’t you thrilled with this matchup? Your bankrupt and for sale team makes the playoffs and gets to play the best drawing road team in the league? They may actually fill up the arena for 2 or 3 games. That’s serious cash come playoff time. It could be a lot tighter than a lot of “experts” think, but I don’t think the Coyotes get to play Cinderella after the first round. Wings move on.
King-  I’m a homer and I’m cool with that…Detroit.

Wings win, so we both finally picked a winner.

So in the west we have Beer correctly picking 3 out of 4, and King getting 1 out of 4.

That brings the total number of correct picks for each of us to…. 3. Out of 8. That’s pretty brutal, but at least King managed to get at least one right in each conference.  We probably would have done better flipping coins. Ah well.

That’s all for now folks, we’re still debating on embarrassing ourselves with picks for round two!!
