Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Charcoal Gray” Edition

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all survived and enjoyed turkey day yesterday. I’ll do my best to keep it quick and light-hearted this week, in an effort to get finished up before I slip back into a turkey induced coma. So with that in mind, let’s get at it, shall we?

  1. Is it really appropriate to call today black Friday anymore? It seems to me that the name, which originally came from this being they day when brick and mortar retailers would see their stores reach the point of profitability for the year (Which would be shown in black ink rather than red for showing a loss), hence the name. With the sales starting earlier and earlier now, I just don’t see the connection anymore. Ah well…. maybe I’m just getting too old.
  2. It is now officially acceptable to not only have Christmas decorations up, but to turn them on at night in my world. And for the record the earliest official time it’s acceptable in my world occurs just after sundown on Thanksgiving. I think it goes back to when I was growing up, and we’d be watching the Cowboys game at grandma’s house. At some point during that game, Norelco would run an ad with Santa Claus using the top of an electric razor as a sled. And that came to signal that it was Christmas time to me.
  3. Now, I’m gonna say this up front. I didn’t go out shopping yesterday. We aren’t going out shopping today, either. But for everyone yelling about places being open and available to shop – deal with it. You’re in the minority. We live in a democratic republic, and people have voted… with their wallets. Maybe it has something to do with their being fewer shopping days this year. I don’t know. I know you won’t get me to go out in that madness, but obviously enough people will to make it worthwhile for stores to be open. So that’s that.
  4. On a more cheerful note if you happen to be from my neck of the woods – we got to see something from a group that works every single Thanksgiving day that we haven’t seen in a decade. The Detroit Lions won a game on Thanksgiving for the first time since 2003! And for that, I am thankful!
  5. Lastly, it’s not a post from me without some sort of random geek type news, and this one is no different. Again, these are here because I think a story about how a comet basically appears to have burned up while flying too close to the sun is cool. If you’ll pardon the pun.

Okay folks, that’s a quick five thoughts on black Friday and I’m off to get back to work. Which in this case means I’m off to make a turkey and swiss omelet. In the meantime, considering I did wake up to snow on the ground yesterday… It is now time to bust these out. After all, it did sorta look like a Marshmallow World.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “What the What?!?!” Edition

Hello friends it’s your friendly neighborhood PB bringing you this week’s Five Thoughts on a Friday. This week was a lot of fun with it being Halloween and all. Hope yours was not as soggy as ours. If you are wondering where Beer is well that is hard to say. Something about work and actually doing it to get paid or some damn thing like that, so here I am. Just like Huey Lewis and the News say working for a living right?

Let’s check out what we have going this week shall we?

  1. Like the title says this week is “What the What” and boy is this a doozy. If you wear a costume that says you are one thing, please don’t get arrested for doing it to someone else like let’s say your boyfriend. Just another example that alcohol can lead stupid people to do even more stupid things.
  2. Once in a while even in sports you can make a “What the What” moment. I have played various sports in my days and watched plenty more with friends but this one was truly a “OH HELL!!” moment. If you are a professional soccer player you know the rules buddy.
  3. This one is also from the ranks of too much alcohol can get you into places and situations that when you wake up you say “What the What?!?!?” I know that would be my reaction if I found myself being arrested as I woke up on the back of a horse
  4. This one is a story and non-story at the same time. The man at the center of this story has passed on. Good thing is they didn’t do to him like what he did to a dead whale back in 1970. How does this tie into the theme today you ask? He did what to what to a whale and it did what?!?! Thank you George for this moment most will never forget!
  5. This is what you don’t want to find when you are hunting ever. If you are in a tree stand and you shoot a deer wait a little longer to come down and check out your prize. If there is another buck hanging around and won’t leave when you come down, I would stay back and do not mess with that buck for sure!! Good thing these guys are quick.

Well folks that’s the Five Thoughts for this week. Hope you had a wonderful Halloween and received lots of treats and no tricks, unless you’re into that kinda thing. In honor of a ground breaking artist that passed this week we say thank you Lou Reed and see you on the Wild side.

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Weird, Gross, Painful, and Freekin’ Cool “Edition

Hello Folks! You guessed right it’s time for Five Thoughts on a Friday the PB edition. As you can tell from the title it will be the start of the annual October festivities of Halloween soon! I hope to entertain you and not in a scary way……..I hope. The bin is full of thrilling items so as Vincent Price said in a great 80’s song “It’s time for, the THRILLER!!!”

  1. This one is from the “Weird” file. I think we all at one time said I wish I could just disappear for a little while. There are even those times when in a fit of anger you may have said “DROP DEAD!” to someone you like or don’t like. But this guy takes it to a whole new level by wanting to come back from the dead? How does one handle it when a judge says “your dead honey.”
  2. This one is from the file marked “Cool”. For all of those kids that play with Hot Wheels cars love how they change colors this one is right in your wheel house. Sounds like they finally have it down to have your paint job change colors depending on the weather. TOO COOL!!
  3. This one comes from the file marked “Painful”. People tend to make mistakes when messing with drunk people. With that said doesn’t mess with a drunken lady with a hand grip like a vice especially when she is pissed off! Also don’t let her get a hold of the man parts because that will hurt! We all know how it ends when you start messing with Sasquatch
  4. From the files of “Gross” comes this dandy one. I don’t know what possesses people to do such things like not replacing the toilet paper roll when empty or let your pet stick its tongue in your mouth after knowing it uses it to lick parts on themselves. I still shake my head with at the thought of this. If you see something on the floor that resembles food and did not see someone put it there, why would you pick it up and eat it? I guess you can ask this TV weather guy and also enquire how the cat puke tasted. Yep you guess it he ate cat puke on LIVE TV?!?!
  5. Finally this is from the “FREEKIN’ COOL!!!!” file. Only in New York do they get such fun things happening. This one needs no introduction so ladies and gentleman………I give you………………..Sir Paul McCartney!!!!!!

Well all that’s that for this edition of Five Thoughts the PB edition. It is a wonderful sunny day here in Michigan so please get out and enjoy yourself. I feel a little old school Black Sabbath coming on. So in honor of the army getting closer to making this a reality, I know Ironman would be proud!

On behalf of Beer, The King and me PB, have a great weekend everyone!!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Soggy Summer Swan Song” Edition

Good morning everyone, and welcome to this week’s edition of Five Thoughts. We’re coming to you live from a soggy, steamy, foggy, gray morning in southeastern Michigan today. A quick check of the calendar reveals that we’ve had a full moon this past week, so yeah… no shortage of weirdness in the news this week! And with that in mind, let’s get to it!

  1. I knew this one was going in the second I saw the headline. I mean, how do you top a headline that reads “Herpes-Infected Monkeys Invade Florida“. Yeah… I got nothing. Except for a feeling of gratitude that I never ended up moving down there. Oh… and if anyone asks, don’t touch the monkey. (No not going with the ‘Shock the Monkey’ song here. We’re going with The old SNL ‘Dieter’ bit)
  2. Speaking of Florida, I was shocked when I read this next article. Because it wasn’t from Florida. No, this one comes to us from New York (Long Island), where authorities found 850 snakes (!) in the home of an animal control officer. Apparently, the guy has a thing for snakes.
  3. Speaking of snakes…. Or, not snakes as the case may be. When is a snake not a snake? When it’s a legless lizard from California, apparently. A new species of legless lizard has been discovered in the dunes just west of Los Angeles Airport (LAX). Heh, they aren’t fooling me. I know what they’re up to. If they look like a snake, they’re a snake. And that close to an airport? They’re snakes trying to get on a plane. I’m on to them!
  4. Since we’re talking about LAX airport, I wonder if those ‘legless lizards’ are trying to sneak onto THIS plane. Yeah, I don’t get it. To me, a Hello Kitty themed Boeing 777 is straight out of the ‘What in the hell??’ department. I just don’t get it.
  5. This last one comes to us courtesy of our resident college football junkie, PB. He may have found it. The college football game played each year where the ‘winner’ takes home the ugliest trophy in all of sports. It’s worth a read, just for the picture of the ‘trophy’ alone. Not to mention the author taking a shot at the stunt the University of Michigan pulled last week. After all, that’s what’s supposed to make college sports fun.

Okay folks, that’s five and I’m out of here. We’ve got a busy agenda on the docket this weekend, including an Oktoberfest celebration tonight.  So, here’s hoping that as we wind down summer, things will dry out just a bit and we can get one last heatwave.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “End of the short week” Edition

Good morning folks, and welcome to yet another edition of Five Thoughts. We’re off and running again this morning, just waiting to get the weekend started. So without fiddling around too much in this space here this morning, let’s get at it shall we?

  1. I like to think I understand the basics of business and marketing pretty well. Especially considering the diplomas on the wall that say I’m supposed to. As such, I totally get the point, economically speaking, that the author is trying to make in this article about McDonald’s possibly needing to abandon the $1 burger on its dollar menu due to increased costs. They simply aren’t making enough money on it to keep it around. But when you bust out a line that says.. “McDonald’s needs to start charging $1.50 or $2 for Dollar Menu items , Peter Saleh, an analyst at Telsey Advisory Group”…
I’m just curious, do you GET the whole point of a DOLLAR menu? Things are supposed to cost a DOLLAR. If they cost more, then they aren’t on the DOLLAR menu anymore. See how that works? Glad I could clear it up for you.
  2. Changing gears completely….  We’ve all seen these NSA online snooping stories… And I’m sure a bunch of people feel safe now because they either were using, or started using a bunch of extra encryption software to protect their data. Well, guess what… Now there’s news that the NSA can crack most anything you might be using. So that helicopter you thought you heard last night when you were surfing the web… Yeah, probably the Feds.  Maybe you used the wrong keywords…
  3. Next up, from the “I’m including this because I think it’s funny and scary at the same time” department…. You’re at home, having breakfast. The car you just sold is sitting in the driveway, waiting for its new owner to pick it up. And here comes a semi trailer with 45 TONS of sand rolling backwards down the road. Over your car and into your house. Yeah, I’d say you’re awake after that.
  4. Next up…. drones! Yes, I’ve posted my fair share of stories about them. I find the technology very interesting. And the “privacy” debate is interesting. This though, this is humorous. All I’m going to add though, as a Colorado town considers passing an ordinance that will allow people with a license to shoot down drones (And they are currently flooded with applications for the licenses), are those infamous words…. This. Will. Not. End Well.
  5. So a funny thing happened before the football game last night…. Sounds like a set-up for a punchline, you know? Aside from the weather delay, one of the stories coming out of the game (OTher than the game itself) was the shot NBC got of the Baltimore Ravens being patted down before the game. Turns out it’s a normal occurrence, designed to check for banned substances like grease or silicon (Which in theory could make someone harder to tackle, I guess). Although I’m still unsure how grease would help when you have a 300 pound missile leading with its helmet looking to remove you from your shoes. Oh well, that’s why I only watch the games on TV.

Okay folks, that’s five and I am about ready to get my weekend started, how about you? In the meantime, if things are still a bit off schedule from the holiday weekend last week like they are around here. Just remember, this morning was not the normal Garbage day. It’s tomorrow. See what I did there?

Have a great weekend folks!

NFL Picks! – The Big One!

This is it folks! The Big One! (Or the Big Game, whatever you want to call it)

Now that we’ve gotten the obligatory Fred Sanford quote out of the way,  a quick rundown of the results from the last round and then it’s time for the Beerbarrel’s “Expert” Picks Guesses! for the game…

Conference Championship pick results:
PB – 0 for 2. Leaving him at 5 for 10 overall.
Beer – 2 for 2. How the heck did that happen? Now 6 out of 10.
Kingkielbasa – 1 for 2. King’s now 1 of 6. To be fair, he did miss the one round.

Now, onto the picks guesses!

Baltimore vs. San Francisco
PB
– Well let’s just say that picking the NFL games is really not much more than sheer luck most of the time. That being said I have totally sucked in my picks since the divisional round. Well to quote Beer “We have a Har-Bowl this year”. All I can say is *sigh*. Not a fan of the coach of the 49ers and not a fan of Baltimore as well especially one linebacker that was involved in some illegal stuff allegedly. So the nice stuff out of the way, it comes down to the two best playoff defenses and one really good offense. I think Mr. “The Super Bowl should not be in an outdoor stadium because I have to wear a skirt” run will come to an end. Colin Kaepernick is the real deal and how this guy got passed over by so many other teams is beyond me. I can’t have my wish of a tie which should tell you how much I like both teams, I pick (gulp!) the 49ers to win.

King – Yawn.  Can there be anymore of a boring Super Bowl then the one we have this year?  I mean, the sports channels are trying desperately to pump this up, but I can say it’s a losing battle.  Two brothers coaching against each other..yeah, not my family…so no big deal.  A player playing in his “final” game…yeah, too bad it wasn’t his final game before he paid for his past crimes…..  Yawn.  So far, I’ve been off on most of my picks so I’m going the easy route here…the winner will be the fans that turn in for the commercials…oh what….I have to pick a football team to win.  Fine…..49ers.  There you happy.

Beer – I have to admit, I’m not totally geeked for this game either. Now, I’m not going to harp on any of the Ray Lewis issues. And let’s be honest here. He’s not the only one involved in this game that’s probably going to retire win or lose. That’s the nature of sports. And even though I somehow got lucky and predicted a HarBowl, I’m not enthralled with the story. And yes, it has been overblown. Where I differ is that I like both teams. I think this is a game with two very good football teams. And I think if history holds, only one of them will play like it on Sunday. In the end, I could really make a case either way. So I’m going to throw all the thinking out the window and pick by my gut – Ravens for the win.

So there we have it. Two picks for San Fransisco, and one for Baltimore. Of course, come Sunday night we’ll get to what’s really important. The commercials! Oh, and the game too, I guess.

Enjoy!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Post Boondoggle” Edition

Howdy folks! Sad to think, but this past Saturday evening I was watching the Mardi Gras parades kick off in New Orleans (I was on the corner or Royal and St. Phillip streets, to be exact). Today I’m back in the office watching it snow out the window. Talk about a chilly (or to be more exact, ‘chilling’ reception). Anyways, on with the show!

  1. We’ll get to our picks for the SuperBowl The “Big Game” early next week. But it seems I was right about one thing in my picks. The Har-Bowl talk is already spiraling out of control. (Get it? Football… spiraling?) Anyhow, even through all of that, this one was pretty funny. Only question would have been if John Harbaugh’s (And Jim’s, too) would have fallen for the prank. Calling in as “John from Baltimore probably gave it away though”.
  2. I’m not gonna say that athletes are superstitious, but if the Ravens win after observing this rule, I could see it becoming a trend. Just like it is in hockey. You know, when they bother to play a full season once in a while. And besides… with the roll they’re on leading up to his last game… who’s gonna tell Ray Lewis “No”?
  3. Staying on a football kick a little bit here, I’m going to enjoy watching a lot of the CBS coverage from New Orleans. Because having just been down in the French Quarter, and especially down near Jackson Square, every time I see “CBS Super Bowl Park at Jackson Square” all I’ll be able to think about will be that giant line up of big tractor-trailer rigs that had to navigate down streets that were built barely wide enough for two horses, let alone modern trucks.
  4. 48 hours ago as I write this, I was still in the French Quarter. And yes, in true boondoggle fashion I was already at a bar. But even as I was enjoying the last bit of nice weather I could before heading home, a brutally cold weather system had people talking about what might happen next year with the Superbowl being playing outdoors in New Jersey. I say bring on a blizzard during the game. The reason everyone remembers the “Tuck Rule” game isn’t simply because of that call. It was because the Raiders and Patriots played it in a snowstorm!
  5. Lastly, and you had to know I’d get in on it a bit, too. This whole fake girlfriend story. Now, I honestly think it’s much ado about nothing, other than the fact that it’s such a bizarre train wreck that you can’t stop watching. But just when Don Banks from SI.com tweets “Not sure Te’o could look or sound worse if he was caught with inflatable doll. Dressed as Norman Bates’ mother. This story needs to go away.” Along come the Dallas Stars who just help keep the viral nature going with this classic

Okay folks, that’s it and I’m wrapping it up. Time to chill back and relax for the weekend. So on that note….

Have a great weekend folks!
