2013 – 2014 NHL Playoff Predictions

Yes, we’re doing it again this year.  Making our predictions……

Western Conference

(1) COL v (WC) MIN

PB- I have a little bias on this match up. Two players on Minnesota decided they wanted to “go home” rather than come to a winner like the Red Wings. Expectations are a beotch eh Zach and Ryan? Seriously Colorado is a solid squad with youth and goaltending. In today’s NHL speed kills and with St. Patrick behind the bench they look like a good one to move on to the next round. Aves in 6.

King – I will start this prediction by laying out a fact.  I have no love at all for Minnie.  From the whole State of Hockey complaining, to the stupid logo, to their owner complaining about the high price of salaries WHILE signing two players for mucho bucks.  Now that I got my personal feelings out of the way, it’s down to opinion of this match up.  I personally believe that Colorado has over achieved this year.  Don’t get me wrong, I think they have a darn good team…just not that great.  That being said, I still think that youth will carry this team at least through the first round.  Aves in 5.

(1) ANA v (WC) DAL

PB- This one is a great matchup of a pairing that is really good Getzloff and Perry vs Benn and Seguin. They should be as advertized but I just don’t think Dallas has enough to spread it around where the waterfowl have more supporting cast members to take them to the next round. Ever heard of a guy named Selanne? The Mighty Ducks in 6

King – I actually like this match up.  Although Ducks had a little struggle towards the end of the season, I really like this team.  Dallas is one of those teams busting it’s hump trying to make the playoffs and has been in that mode for alittle while.  I’m going with the Ducks that are mighty though as I think they just have a tad bit better team.  Ducks in 7

(2) STL v (3) CHI

PB- This is going to be a hard one to figure this year. Chicago and St. Louis are both hurting with top players either coming off injury or are hopefully coming back soon. Both solid squads and hard working. Chitown has a couple of cups and plenty of playoff experience where the Blues are still figuring out their way through the world. I just hate to say this but the Blackhawks in 5.

King – St. Louis has just looked awful toward the end of the year.  They just have too many players not scoring and although high scoring games are not the norm in the playoffs…you do need goals to win. 5 goals in your last 7 games isn’t going to cut it.  St. Louis is one of those teams I would love to see advance..but I don’t see it this year.  Sigh Blackhawks in 5.

(2) SJ v (3) LA

PB- Wow an all Cali matchup! Now that worked out well for them as unlike in the past when the Wings were suppose to travel to and from Cali for a round or two. That said time to embrace the new NHL and this fine matchup. SJ has a well balanced attack but they have one major flaw in their program Joe Thornton. He has all the talent in the world but has never been successful in the playoffs. LA has a cup recently and plenty of size and speed to take over this series and a huge plus by the name of Quick. Kings crown the Sharks in 6.

King – San Jose…San Jose…when are you going to get a break and have a great playoff run?  I unfortunately don’t see it this year.  Quick seems to have bounced back from his injury prior to the Olympics and finished extremely strong.  Niemi doesn’t raise the same level of confidence going into the playoffs.  Could this be the place where Miller ends up???  Kings in 7.

Eastern Conference

(1) BOS v (WC) DET

PB- Great original six matchup for the first round. Boston is solid but somehow the Wings won the season series 3-1. Boston has a cup with plenty of playoff experienced players where the Wings and the youth movement seem to love the opportunity to play and show they are up to the task. This one is going to be one to go down to the wire and in typical fashion I see a couple of overtime games in this series. Boston is strong but I see the Wings pulling the upset in 7.

King-I know alot of people are expecting this to be the one upset this year.  I mean, as PB pointed out, they were 3 to 1 winners in the regular season.  They are very similar in play.  I on the other hand believe this is the year that the “new guys” from Detroit learn their lesson of what the playoffs are all about….Bruins in 6

(2) TAM v (3) MON

PB- Too bad that Montreal pulled the Lightening in the first round. Oh wait I think that was a good thing for them. The bolts lost their goalie to the dreaded upper body injury even though it looked like he was shot in the leg. As much as I really like Stamkos the bolts just don’t have Stevie Y lacing up the skates and Marty is now on the Rangers. Leadership is lacking but the Canadians have a huge thing working for them a little hot streak and a great goalie in Price. Montreal in 6.

King – Montreal has been my “meh” team of the year.  I think they’re alright, but haven’t really done anything to make me say wow.  I do like the pick up of Vaneck although in his last playoffs he was -7 in 7 games.  Tampa has that something this year.  Everyone said, “they’ll crumble” when Stamkos went down…guess what, they still won.  Everyone said, “they’re crazy” when they traded away St. Louis…guess what, they continued to win.  I pick Tampa in 7

(1) PIT v (WC) CLB

PB- Hey Columbus welcome to the playoffs for the second time in your history. The Pens will welcome you with a solid effort and flopping flower (aka Fleury) will tighten up and play solid. The most important thing is the Pens have a lot of firepower and I just don’t see the Bluejackets able to match that scoring ability. Pains me to say this but the non-flying birds in 6.

King – I’m not that crazy about this round.  I think that Pittsburgh is happy they pulled Columbus and not Detroit, but I’m not too sure about that feeling.  Something in the gut tells me this is the one upset that happens every year.  Bobrovsky scares me as it seems he’s on his game and this is the time to do that.  Call me crazy…Columbus in 7

(2) NYR v (3) PHI

PB- This is will be the most hard hitting of the series in both Conferences. The Rangers are solid and have plenty of leadership and playoff experience to boot. The Flyers started really slow but built a solid season behind balance scoring and plenty of grit. The biggest “If” is if Henrik Lundqvist can stand on his head and take over a game or two. I love both teams but the magic eight ball says Rangers in 7 with 3 overtime games.

King – Ohhhh, this is match up I can’t wait to see.  Most people wrote off the Flyers after their horrible start, but man..they picked up their play so much.  The Rangers look sharp, but something about them seems alittle off.  I’m thinking if Mason can play out of his mind…which is a stretch but doable….UPDATE: Mason is now unavailable with an “upper body injury.”  I will still stick with my pick, but it just became alot harder! Flyers in 7

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “What the What?!?!” Edition

Hello friends it’s your friendly neighborhood PB bringing you this week’s Five Thoughts on a Friday. This week was a lot of fun with it being Halloween and all. Hope yours was not as soggy as ours. If you are wondering where Beer is well that is hard to say. Something about work and actually doing it to get paid or some damn thing like that, so here I am. Just like Huey Lewis and the News say working for a living right?

Let’s check out what we have going this week shall we?

  1. Like the title says this week is “What the What” and boy is this a doozy. If you wear a costume that says you are one thing, please don’t get arrested for doing it to someone else like let’s say your boyfriend. Just another example that alcohol can lead stupid people to do even more stupid things.
  2. Once in a while even in sports you can make a “What the What” moment. I have played various sports in my days and watched plenty more with friends but this one was truly a “OH HELL!!” moment. If you are a professional soccer player you know the rules buddy.
  3. This one is also from the ranks of too much alcohol can get you into places and situations that when you wake up you say “What the What?!?!?” I know that would be my reaction if I found myself being arrested as I woke up on the back of a horse
  4. This one is a story and non-story at the same time. The man at the center of this story has passed on. Good thing is they didn’t do to him like what he did to a dead whale back in 1970. How does this tie into the theme today you ask? He did what to what to a whale and it did what?!?! Thank you George for this moment most will never forget!
  5. This is what you don’t want to find when you are hunting ever. If you are in a tree stand and you shoot a deer wait a little longer to come down and check out your prize. If there is another buck hanging around and won’t leave when you come down, I would stay back and do not mess with that buck for sure!! Good thing these guys are quick.

Well folks that’s the Five Thoughts for this week. Hope you had a wonderful Halloween and received lots of treats and no tricks, unless you’re into that kinda thing. In honor of a ground breaking artist that passed this week we say thank you Lou Reed and see you on the Wild side.

Five Thoughts on a Firday – The “Foggy Fall Friday” Edition

Good morning everyone and welcome to this week’s edition of Five Thoughts.  We’ve got an odd mix this week, so rather than try to make sense of any of it, let’s just get right to it shall we?

  1. I’m gonna lead with this one because I never miss a chance to post one of these types of stories. Why? I’m not sure. Maybe it’s a reminder that it’s really not safe to go back into the water. Or maybe it’s just that I think it’s freaking cool to see an eight foot long great white shark and be alive with all your parts to talk about it.
  2. Then again, in a true case of doing without thinking we have the surfer who jumped off a cliff into huge surf because he was late for his heat in a surfing competition. Did he not see the article we were just talking about before this story? The link is worth a click just for the picture they got of him in mid-jump, though.
  3.  Back last year, Felix Baumgartner set the mother of all skydiving records by basically jumping from outer space back to earth. Now, his sponsors have released the point of view video along with mission data indicators. And once again, all I can say is damn, that was cool. And crazy. And some other words I probably shouldn’t say in public. Think I’m being a little too over the top?
  4. Next up, from the ‘Maybe they were too busy cleaning up other hazardous material sites’ department…. Comes news that as the federal government in the United States got back to work, a memo was circulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. After a 16 year old can of Campbell’s soup was discovered in an EPA office refrigerator.  Also of note… the EPA has an office fridge that’s lasted 16 years??? And who puts canned soup in a fridge, anyways?
  5. Lastly, I need to post this one. I’ve been very, very critical of the NHL for a while now. And I’ve seen nothing from the league that makes me re-think my position on that. What gets lost in the translation of that though, is that some of the teams, their owners, and the people who work for them are really good people doing really good things. Like the Toronto Maples Leafs reaching out to the family of a long time season ticket holder who had passed away. Even sending a letter from the GM and flowers. Very nice.

Okay folks, that’s five and I’ve got a ton of stuff to get done before I can start my weekend, so yeah. I gotta go. Yeah, believe it or not I’m working for living just like everyone else. Including Huey.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Weird, Gross, Painful, and Freekin’ Cool “Edition

Hello Folks! You guessed right it’s time for Five Thoughts on a Friday the PB edition. As you can tell from the title it will be the start of the annual October festivities of Halloween soon! I hope to entertain you and not in a scary way……..I hope. The bin is full of thrilling items so as Vincent Price said in a great 80’s song “It’s time for, the THRILLER!!!”

  1. This one is from the “Weird” file. I think we all at one time said I wish I could just disappear for a little while. There are even those times when in a fit of anger you may have said “DROP DEAD!” to someone you like or don’t like. But this guy takes it to a whole new level by wanting to come back from the dead? How does one handle it when a judge says “your dead honey.”
  2. This one is from the file marked “Cool”. For all of those kids that play with Hot Wheels cars love how they change colors this one is right in your wheel house. Sounds like they finally have it down to have your paint job change colors depending on the weather. TOO COOL!!
  3. This one comes from the file marked “Painful”. People tend to make mistakes when messing with drunk people. With that said doesn’t mess with a drunken lady with a hand grip like a vice especially when she is pissed off! Also don’t let her get a hold of the man parts because that will hurt! We all know how it ends when you start messing with Sasquatch
  4. From the files of “Gross” comes this dandy one. I don’t know what possesses people to do such things like not replacing the toilet paper roll when empty or let your pet stick its tongue in your mouth after knowing it uses it to lick parts on themselves. I still shake my head with at the thought of this. If you see something on the floor that resembles food and did not see someone put it there, why would you pick it up and eat it? I guess you can ask this TV weather guy and also enquire how the cat puke tasted. Yep you guess it he ate cat puke on LIVE TV?!?!
  5. Finally this is from the “FREEKIN’ COOL!!!!” file. Only in New York do they get such fun things happening. This one needs no introduction so ladies and gentleman………I give you………………..Sir Paul McCartney!!!!!!

Well all that’s that for this edition of Five Thoughts the PB edition. It is a wonderful sunny day here in Michigan so please get out and enjoy yourself. I feel a little old school Black Sabbath coming on. So in honor of the army getting closer to making this a reality, I know Ironman would be proud!

On behalf of Beer, The King and me PB, have a great weekend everyone!!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Shoot! I forgot the title!” Edition

Howdy folks! If we’re posting this, it must be Friday! It’s been a relatively quiet week for us here, but I haven’t heard anyone complaining. So, where do we go from here? Well, let’s get started and find out, shall we?

  1. I’ve said before that often times I know something is gonna make one of these posts as soon as I see it. I’ve also said before that sometimes the posts just write themselves. And then there are times like this, where you just know a story about two women trying stuff $60,000 in cash into their bras and cross the border needs to be a Five Thoughts item, but there’s just no way to improve upon the basic description. So there you go.
  2. Okay, given the misadventures of some of my co-bloggers, and our general sophomoric senses of humor in general, there was no way a list of 14 Places you have to poop before you die was going to not make the list as soon as we found out about it. I’ll have to leave it to the others to comment on the quality of said list, however.
  3. I’m sorry.. kind of. I know this is a serious subject, and that there are lives in the balance. It’s just that this seems like something I would have seen in a Looney Tunes cartoon while I was growing up. Not something played out in a court of law in real life! It appears that there is an inmate in Death Row trying to get his reprieve overturned. He doesn’t want it. And as I was reading the article all I can think of is….
  4. Sometimes, life imitates art. Other times, apparently it imitates an old Saturday Night Live skit. As in the case of a Chicago Blackhawks fan who suffered a heart attack while watching one of the games of this years Stanley Cup final matchup.
  5. Lastly, I’m a bit bummed that the scheduling didn’t workout better. Last weekend, the latest Superman movie franchise re-boot came out. I haven’t seen it. I’m not sure I even will. But it has me bummed. If it would have come out one weekend later, it would have coincided with the largest full moon of the year. The “Supermoon”. And then we could have played the whole “it’s a bird, it’s a plane… It’s Supermoon?” routine. You know, “Superman, Supermoon”. Somehow, I don’t think it would work any better than David Letterman’s “Uma / Oprah” bit though.

Okay, that’s five and I’m ready to call it a week. How do I know it’s time to go? Because, I use the formatting to tell me how many things I’ve posted on. Yep, it knows how to add it up. Hmmm… Add it Up. You know, I’ve been taking flak from some people about my song choices, lately so that gives me an idea. No, I’m not going with that one, but I think it’s about time the Violent Femmes make an appearance here. In the meantime, until next week I’m “Gone Daddy Gone“.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Throw it Together” Edition

Howdy folks! Welcome to this week’s edition of five thoughts. I meant to take notes this week, and have a bunch of fun stuff ready to go, I really did. Of course, you can all probably guess from the title how that all worked out. No notes. So we’re writing this one live! Hey, some bands are famous for their live performances! Yeah, not gonna aim for that though – besides… we’re a bit short on pyrotechnics here at the office. Anyway, on with today’s post!

  1. I see the King and PB got their picks up for the Stanley Cup finals this week. I’m still not watching, and was only vaguely aware of how was playing. I gotta wonder though… What happened to the guys from Cigars and Scotch? Did they get left out because they were beating up on the guys too much?
  2. Okay, I often post stuff “just because I can. And this might be one of those times. Or, some people might think it’s ‘cute’. I don’t. I think a 6 year old catching a massive tarpon is freaking awesome! I just have one question though… Did they have a tether on the little guy to keep him from being pulled into the water by that huge fish?
  3. Staying on, or maybe in this case, in the water… Another cool story popped up this week. It seems there’s an expedition that’s trying to find the wreck of the Griffin. The Griffin is a ship dating back to colonial times, that disappeared on Lake Michigan some 300 years ago. And folks, don’t let the name “Lake Michigan” fool you. It may be fresh water but it’s every bit as dangerous as an ocean.
  4. This one has to be from the “Where on earth to these people find the time to come up with this crap?” department. Apparently, someone got a burr in their saddle and decided to file a lawsuit to challenge the copyright of the song…… “Happy Birthday“. I’m telling you, you can’t make this crap up if you try!
  5. Lastly, what’s a Five Thoughts without a note about something automotive related?  And this week, we have one. I like to call it… “How not to treat a car that’s worth $400,000“. And for those of you who don’t want to bother reading it since you probably already guessed what happened? We have a video!  YIKES!!

Okay folks, that’s this week’s thrown together post and I’m off to enjoy what looks to be a nice weekend. Also – Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!
In the meantime, a little departure from some of the normal music. We’re gonna go with one that used to be in the tape deck of dad’s car growing up.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Tough Enough” Edition

Howdy folks, and welcome to this week’s edition of Five Thoughts. I’m Beermaker, and I’ll be your guide through this week’s review of the weird, wacky, and just plain dumb. First off, to answer a question… No. I was not on vacation last week. PB just wanted to write Five Thoughts last week, and I think he did a bang up job. So, with that out of the way… Let’s get started!

  1. Now, I’m still officially boycotting the NHL, but I never did stop being a fan of hockey. And having played the game, even at a recreational level, you gain a real appreciation for how tough these guys really are. It’s often said they’re the toughest pro athletes around. Usually that’s made in reference to guys playing with a broken jaw, or a big cut from a high stick, etc. Well, I’m here to tell you folks – it’s been done before in the past, but the gold standard of tough in the NHL was just reaffirmed this past week.  What is said standard? Well, let’s just go with the text from the article….
“The shot broke Campbell’s leg, specifically the right fibula. He stayed on the ice for 10 seconds, clearly in pain. Then he did something only a hockey player would do. He got up and killed the rest of the penalty off.”
Go ahead. Read that last part again. The part where we put the hyperlink. He finished killing a penalty. On a Broken Leg. For another 40 seconds. That deserves a video, and I think there’s one that fits perfectly…..
  2. Speaking of tough… For years, Ford Motor Company has used a tagline in their truck advertising, “Built Ford Tough”. Turns out, they may want to start using that line in the Mustang advertising as well. We all saw the devastation from the Tornado that tore through Moore,  Oklahoma. Suffice to say it was tragic, and horrible. It was not enough, however, enough to knock a 2003 Ford Mustang off the road. It survived a direct hit from an EF-5 tornado and kept running! The article is really worth a read.
  3. Changing gears a bit here… We all get crap in the mail. Junk mail, bills, advertising flyers, the usually. What we don’t usually get in the mail is actual, bona-fide, dog crap. But that’s what’s happening in a small town in Spain. When people let their dogs do what the need to do, and then don’t pick it up? The city does. And apparently mails it back to the owner as ‘lost property’. Hey, at least they aren’t leaving it on the front porch in a burning paper bag, right?
  4. It’s not often we get to include a PSA (That would be public service announcement in this case) here in a Five Thoughts post. But today we do. Just remember folks, you can steal the copper from the house, but if you steal and drink some of the beer you find there as well…. The police will find you.
  5. And lastly. Apparently today is National Doughnut Day. And what better way to lead into a new part of a theme part dedicated to the family led by one of the biggest doughnut lovers of all. One Homer J. Simpson. Universal Orlando has released pictures of the new Simpson’s themed area of their park. And it looks hilarious! Any one want to go grab a Krusty Burger? As for the link between Homer and doughnuts? It’s very well documented.

Okay folks, that’s five and I’m looking to get an early start on the weekend. In the meantime, I want to close out here with a song/video just for our very own Kingkielbasa. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the choice here today as he prepares to head across the pond. Nothing like a nice song from The Clash to get you going on a Friday.

Have a great weekend folks!
