2013 3rd Round NHL Predictions

Sigh.  It appears that we really should stop having guest pick out winners for the NHL playoffs.  Here is the updated score sheet:

PB- 8 correct

King- 6 correct (for the record, I did pick the length of two of the series in the 2nd round)

Cigars and Scotch -9 correct

Western Conference (LA Kings vs. Chicago Blackhawks):

King-Sigh, although I did pick the Hawks to win in 7, I was hoping for a miracle.  It did not happen.  I do think Detroit scare alot of people in Chicago and showed the rest of the league that you don’t need multi-million dollar signings by a whining owner to play great hockey. (I’m looking at you Minnesota!)  I also believe when Quick is on his game, he’s one scary goalie.  He’s looked on his game lately. Wait….a message coming in….Dustin Brown…please put Shaw through the boards..signed Flippula.  Kings in 6

CigarsandScotch -[Holds envelope up to head] Food in the crown!

[Blows into envelope] The Hawks will take the Kings out to lunch!

Okay, the ‘Hawks escaped with their headpieces intact from the Wings and have some serious mojo working for them.  Sharp and Toews are coming around.  Add that jerk Hossa and his buddy Kane and the Blackhawk forwards are strong.

Crawford has been standing on his head as of late and he could be the difference in this series.

The Kings are just solid all around.  They are big, deep, and sound.  Bottom line, though is Quick. He carries this team on his back.  Unfortunately, it is not big enough.

Hawks topple the Kings in 6.

PB – This will not be as fun a series as the Wings v. Hawks. LA should not even be allowed to have a hockey team as 98% of that whole area does not even know who Eddie Shore is. I saw a lot of holes in the Hawks game but I will leave that to LA to figure out. Toews was being sucked off as a great leader by NBC against the Wings but showed he is not as mentally strong as other captains. LA has solid d-men that can handle the forecheck of the Hawks. Oh did I mention that LA has the best goalie in the league in Quick? This series comes down to both teams are happy the Wings are moving East next year. Oh wait that’s another topic (hee hee hee). Bottom line is both teams are solid but there is only one Quick. Dustin Brown smashes Andrew Shaw into the boards and takes out the first three rows of Hawks fans. Kings in 5

Eastern Conference (Boston Bruins vs. Pittsburgh Penguins)

King-I’m starting to believe there is someone with a sillier playoff beard than Crosby…Shaw from the Blackhawks.  Will Iginla be this years Hossa after turning the offer from Boston down to watch them hold up the cup? I’m not sure if Boston is that great or New York was that bad, but if they can win a series with Rask playing net as Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master……they are my pick.  I’m so sorry to Boston for turning my back on you.  Please Cam Neely forgive me and welcome me back into the family.  Bruins in 7

CigarsandScotch-[Holds envelope up to head] Cleaning their claws

[Blows into envelope] What the Bruins will be doing after this series

I am sticking with the Bruins all the way through this thing.  I think their aggressive forechecking style will really slow the Pens down enough for Lucic to stay hot.  Watch out for Marchand as well.

The Pens have Vokoun playing like crazy now, so if they can break the Bruins checking and out skate them, Vokoun will keep them in the game to let them score a boatload of goals.

Bruins squeak by in 7.

PB – One of my favorite teams in the Bruins because my youngest son thinks Seguin is awesome from his days as a Plymouth Whaler. ( Like the OHL reference?) Thing is Boston is solid on all four lines with no real “Superstar” that a team can key on. The Pens however were channeling their inner wannabe late 90’s Red Wings and put a collection of future HOFers for a Cup run. FYI I still think Crosby is a #ussy (Trying to keep it PG for ya King) Feel bad for Vokoun because Boston will crash the net hard and look out for Chara’s 100+ mph slapper from the point. Love Iginla but sorry to say the run is over. Bruins in 6 with all games going into 2 OT’s.

And since CigarsandScotch has had a stellar run in these predictions, I’ve got to give them their due.  Here’s a little message from them.

“Bring it, Ladies!  75% right last round.  Wait, what was that?  Didn’t we pick 75% in the first round as well?  Damn straight! Vegas is calling right now.  Gotta go.

2013 2nd Round NHL Playoffs

What is the world coming to!!!  Maybe we should stop having guest picking series. Here is the outcome of the first round predictions:

  • PB- 4 correct
  • King- 4 correct
  • Cigars and Scotch -what the world…..6 correct???

I think something is wrong here, but to quote CigarsandScotch…”75% right in the first round!  Nailed the Western Conference and split the East.  Suck on that!!!”

So here we go with round 2:

(1) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (7) Ottawa Senators

PB – One of two 1 vs 7 matchups this playoff season. Guess what? I still hate Cindy Crosby  and think the team was more complete without him in the lineup. The Pens have a situation brewing if the Fleury meltdown is a sign of things to come. Vokoun is just good this could be a sweep but if he has a Fleury moment the Sens could take the series. Ottawa has something in the water up there as they have played well without their stars. Problem is…….well they are playing the Pens. I see this one as a tight series and sure will be entertaining for sure. Pens in 7 but I still hate Cindy!!!

King- So, I’m pretty impressed with the way the Sens handled Montreal.  I have to admit I didn’t see this one coming (obviously as you can see from my pick).  The bigger question is which goalie will show up for the Pens.  The one that stops pucks or the one that is ready for the gol season to start.  I’m also starting to believe in the power of the mustache.  I’m going against the grain here and I’m going Sens in 6

CigarsandScotch-The Battle of the Shortened Names, or the “Syd the Kid Media Extravaganza,” ends with a severe arse whoopin’ on the Sens.  They are impeached and sent packing. Penguins in 5.

(4) Boston Bruins vs. (6) New York Rangers

PB – Momentum is on the side of the team that won their game 7. UUummm well that would be both teams. The momentum is on the side of the team that finally found their scoring touch…..that would be both teams again. Damnit. Oh well both teams fought hard to make this round but I see one glaring problem in this series, Boston is almost bipolar. They are one team one night and another team the next. They have been really inconsistent and their pick up of Jagr well really has not paid off…..yet. Nash is good but he has never played this deep into the playoffs before and Boston has. Potential loss of Boychuk could be huge. Coin flip has Boston in 6

King – Living across the water from Windsor, which is no way near Toronto, I could still hear the gasp from the fans in Toronto about their team losing a game 7 in O/T after leading 4-1 in the 3rd period.  Yikes.  That being said, I’m not too sure I’m in love with the team the Bruins have become in the playoffs.  I’m no Rangers fan, but man, give credit where credit is due.  I didn’t think they had it in them to play good hockey and win the series against Washington. That being said, I’m going against my own heart and picking the Rangers in 7

CigarsandScotch- Old time hockey, coach!  Now we are talkin’.  None of this mamby pamby California-latte-drinking hockey.  This is what we call playoff hockey.  (Wings and Hawks, too!)  WE have big playoff beards and crushed cans of Hamms in the corner of the locker room.  Sticking with the original projection and taking the Bruins in 6.  (How can you not after they come back from 3 goals down!)

Western Conference Semifinals

(1) Chicago Blackhawks vs. (7) Detroit Red Wings

PB – One team is down right scary good this whole season. The Blackhawks have talent on all lines and they all contribute, two solid goaltenders, solid defense, and a coach that has won a Cup. That said the Wings have shown me something that I knew they had but they saved it for the playoffs and that is heart. Their best players needed to be at their best and they were. Howard is underrated in my opinion by those in the NHL so this is when he can make a name for himself and totally steal a series. I see this one of two ways it can go the way of the regular season and the Hawks sweep or they can go a tough 7 games. Split the difference and say the Hawks in 6.

King – Living in the Detroit market, I have to chuckle when the local fans were calling for Mrazek to be the starting goalie over Jimmy Howard.  I mean come on, Jimmy has played fantastic this playoff round and almost won it by himself.  He’s going to need to be that good or better for the Wings to make it through this round.  Although all games this season except for the Easter massacre was decided by overtime or shootout, I pick the Blackhawks in 7

CigarsandScotch-Ok, here is what is going to happen: Quenneville threatens his team by stating that he will “shave the stache'” with Stan Makita’s ’61 skates.”  The team rallies behind this threat.  The Wings respond with threats of limo rides down Woodward with Mr. Illitch at the wheel.  Hawks in 6.

(5) Los Angeles Kings vs. (6) San Jose Sharks

PB – Did the Sharks play in the first round? I didn’t even notice. They didn’t even break a sweat against the Canucks. I think they brought Jamie Baker out of retirement to score on the Canucks. The Kings proved they are still a tough hard nosed team that can grind out another cup if they keep this up. I don’t see a fun time for the Sharks in this battle of California. Just waiting for Joe Thornton to go all Joe Thornton and have one hell of a series…..NOT!! The Kings are solid and I see changes coming to the Sharks this off season. The Kings channel their inner purple sweaters and take this one and the Sharks don’t even know what hit them. Kings in 5

CigarsandScotch-The Battle of Cali! This is absurd.  California teams battling it out in the Stanley Cup playoffs.  Cats and Dogs sleeping together!  Mass Hysteria!  Sharks upend the defending champs in 6.

King- Seriously, did anyone think the Sharks were going to handle the Canucks the way they did?  I mean, I knew that that series was going to be a snoozer, but come on…  The Kings on the other hand remembered what it took to be winners and showed the Blues.  I’m hoping Quick learned his lesson about puck handling and plays like he did at the end of the series.  Kings in 6

There you have it folks.  I’m personally hoping I do a better job this round.  Also, it’s only fair since he had a great 1st round I leave you with another quote from Cigars and Scotch…

“Listen to Cigars and Scotch podcast or I’ll be bringing those Quenneville clippings over to your house for Sunday brunch!”

And It’s the Hawks!

After 49 years, the Blackhawks have hoisted the Stanley Cup again.

As for us? Well, we finally both got it right for once. We had picked the Hawks to win it. Hey, we had to get one right eventually, didn’t we?

With that, the silly season can now begin. Next year officially becomes “This Year”, and the whole thing starts over. So who will be the teams to watch (in the offseason)? Hard to say.

  • Chicago – The defending champs always bear watching. Even if it’s just to see what crazy things they do with the Stanley Cup.
  • New Jersey – Still haven’t hired a coach but, they’re the Devils. They can be a machine at times.
  • Phoenix – The fact they they were a good team this year gets lost in the fact that the ownership situation down there is, to be charitable… A train wreck. That train wreck is of course, why we have to keep watching. Can’t look away.
  • Pittsburgh – No longer the defending champs. Still very young and talented though. But rumors of a big name like Malkin being moved have started to surface. (Chicago, with a bunch of good young players should watch this too. It could happen to them before long). Does it actually happen? We’ll find out.
  • Tampa Bay – New owner, new GM, new coach. Watch to see who stays, who goes, and maybe mostly importantly… who they bring in.
  • Carolina – Strange things are afoot, with the owner looking for a partner to take a minority ownership stake. In the meantime, they’re cutting payroll well below the salary cap. You never want to hear that as a fan.

Those are just a few of the teams that jump out to me as I write this. Of course, as the off season progresses things can change fast. Two weeks ago, I’d have probably put Detroit on the list, but they got Lidstrom and Holmstrom signed, and now it looks like they’ll be pretty quiet. Will Atlanta make some noise? They usually don’t, but time will tell.

Later folks!

The NHL playoffs… How’d we do?

Well, the 1st round of the NHL playoffs is over. How’d we do with our Beerbarrel picks? Let’s take a look!

Out East, here’s what we said:
Washington (1) vs Montreal (8):
Beer: When in doubt, pick the Habs! That used to always be the safe bet. I’m not in doubt here though. Caps win and move on.
King:  I have chosen my mancrush as the grand winner this year so I’m going to have to go with King Ovie’s team Washington.

Annnnd…. We both got clobbered on this one. Washington chokes away a 3-1 series lead and loses to the 8th seeded Habs in 7 games. Ouch.

New Jersey (2) vs Philadelphia (7):
Beer: Every season, it seams like there’s a first round upset. This is not it. Devils advance.
King: Sorry Phillie, gotta go with the Devils on this one.  I don’t think they’re a great team, but believe they are the better team in this match up.

Can you tell we really didn’t have a good feel for this one. Flyers in 5 games over the Devils, who lose their coach the very next day as he retires.

Buffalo (3) vs Boston (6):
Beer: This could well be the one. I’m on the fence with this one, but I’m playing the odds and going with the Sabres on the strength of Ryan Miller alone. But you have been warned.
King: Got to go against my brother from another mother on this one.  I believe Boston, although having a horrible year, will be one of the better playoff teams. Plus…CAM NEELY WAS MY IDOL..GO BRUINS! (I guess he’s picking Boston, huh?)

Maybe that shrine to Cam Neely that the King keeps actually works. Bruins win.

Pittsburgh (4) versus Ottawa (5)
Beer: Call it a gut instinct. No, I don’t have it in for the Pens. Despite the merciless over-hyping of Sydney Crosby, I actually like the Penguins. I just think they’re about to find out how rough the defending champs can have it in the playoffs and get earlier tee times than a lot of people think. Senators are the pick here.
King: Sheez….and I was the total Sid the Kid hater of the two of us.  As much as I predicted at the end of the playoffs last year that Pitt wouldn’t get past the first round…And as much as I actually love the Sens ( got an old beat up hat in my closet to prove my fandom)…AND as much as I hate the NHL bending over backwards for the Pens…..Sigh, I pick the Pens.

Sydney Crosby lit this one up. He did what good players need to do this time of year, and the Penguins advance (And are suddenly the highest seed left in the Eastern Conference).

So the final tally of our Eastern Conference picks? King goes 2 out of for, and Beer shows why he never actually bets on sports with the big old goose egg in the “got it right” column.

And in the West:
San Jose (1) vs Colorado (8):
Beer: The Sharks, perennial playoff underachievers, versus the Avs, a shadow of a once dominate team. I really can’t find much reason to want to watch this one, and I like the Sharks for the most part. Sharks move on.
King: ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…oh wait, was that a series….Avs, just based on the fact that the Sharks are doomed for a first round exit every year.

Beer finally gets one right as the Sharks advance. King found inconsolable.

Chicago (2) vs Nashville (7):
Beer: If a team from Nashville pulls an upset and nobody in Nashville notices, does it really happen? I’m not convinced it’ll happen, but it’s a gut feel with no logic. And that’s how I’m picking them. That’s right. I picked the Preds.
King: There are only two teams that I hope never win the cup again and Chicago is one of them. I think the Preds are actually a pretty decent playoff team and will scare if not upset a few teams.  I’m with Beer on this one, Preds.

Yeah, about those upset picks…..

Vancouver (3) vs Los Angeles (6):
Beer: Roberto Luongo has an Olympic gold medal. That seems to make people forget that he also has a near meltdown as a playoff goalie on his resume (last year). All the same, the Canucks move on in this one.
King: This one I’m just picking on who I’d like to see.  I’ve been a fan of the Kings all season so I’m hoping and picking the Kings.

Beer gets another one right! King picked the Kings, that at least has be be worth a laugh for the play on words, right?

Phoenix (4) vs Detroit (5):
Beer: I have no idea on this one. You have Detroit (my hometown team – even when I lived out of state) against the former Winnipeg Jets (I just like that name better). There’s so many storylines here it’s crazy. The Wings comeback to make th playoffs, the NHL owned Coyotes. And really, if you’re the NHL – aren’t you thrilled with this matchup? Your bankrupt and for sale team makes the playoffs and gets to play the best drawing road team in the league? They may actually fill up the arena for 2 or 3 games. That’s serious cash come playoff time. It could be a lot tighter than a lot of “experts” think, but I don’t think the Coyotes get to play Cinderella after the first round. Wings move on.
King-  I’m a homer and I’m cool with that…Detroit.

Wings win, so we both finally picked a winner.

So in the west we have Beer correctly picking 3 out of 4, and King getting 1 out of 4.

That brings the total number of correct picks for each of us to…. 3. Out of 8. That’s pretty brutal, but at least King managed to get at least one right in each conference.  We probably would have done better flipping coins. Ah well.

That’s all for now folks, we’re still debating on embarrassing ourselves with picks for round two!!
