2013 – 2014 NHL Playoff Predictions

Yes, we’re doing it again this year.  Making our predictions……

Western Conference

(1) COL v (WC) MIN

PB- I have a little bias on this match up. Two players on Minnesota decided they wanted to “go home” rather than come to a winner like the Red Wings. Expectations are a beotch eh Zach and Ryan? Seriously Colorado is a solid squad with youth and goaltending. In today’s NHL speed kills and with St. Patrick behind the bench they look like a good one to move on to the next round. Aves in 6.

King – I will start this prediction by laying out a fact.  I have no love at all for Minnie.  From the whole State of Hockey complaining, to the stupid logo, to their owner complaining about the high price of salaries WHILE signing two players for mucho bucks.  Now that I got my personal feelings out of the way, it’s down to opinion of this match up.  I personally believe that Colorado has over achieved this year.  Don’t get me wrong, I think they have a darn good team…just not that great.  That being said, I still think that youth will carry this team at least through the first round.  Aves in 5.

(1) ANA v (WC) DAL

PB- This one is a great matchup of a pairing that is really good Getzloff and Perry vs Benn and Seguin. They should be as advertized but I just don’t think Dallas has enough to spread it around where the waterfowl have more supporting cast members to take them to the next round. Ever heard of a guy named Selanne? The Mighty Ducks in 6

King – I actually like this match up.  Although Ducks had a little struggle towards the end of the season, I really like this team.  Dallas is one of those teams busting it’s hump trying to make the playoffs and has been in that mode for alittle while.  I’m going with the Ducks that are mighty though as I think they just have a tad bit better team.  Ducks in 7

(2) STL v (3) CHI

PB- This is going to be a hard one to figure this year. Chicago and St. Louis are both hurting with top players either coming off injury or are hopefully coming back soon. Both solid squads and hard working. Chitown has a couple of cups and plenty of playoff experience where the Blues are still figuring out their way through the world. I just hate to say this but the Blackhawks in 5.

King – St. Louis has just looked awful toward the end of the year.  They just have too many players not scoring and although high scoring games are not the norm in the playoffs…you do need goals to win. 5 goals in your last 7 games isn’t going to cut it.  St. Louis is one of those teams I would love to see advance..but I don’t see it this year.  Sigh Blackhawks in 5.

(2) SJ v (3) LA

PB- Wow an all Cali matchup! Now that worked out well for them as unlike in the past when the Wings were suppose to travel to and from Cali for a round or two. That said time to embrace the new NHL and this fine matchup. SJ has a well balanced attack but they have one major flaw in their program Joe Thornton. He has all the talent in the world but has never been successful in the playoffs. LA has a cup recently and plenty of size and speed to take over this series and a huge plus by the name of Quick. Kings crown the Sharks in 6.

King – San Jose…San Jose…when are you going to get a break and have a great playoff run?  I unfortunately don’t see it this year.  Quick seems to have bounced back from his injury prior to the Olympics and finished extremely strong.  Niemi doesn’t raise the same level of confidence going into the playoffs.  Could this be the place where Miller ends up???  Kings in 7.

Eastern Conference

(1) BOS v (WC) DET

PB- Great original six matchup for the first round. Boston is solid but somehow the Wings won the season series 3-1. Boston has a cup with plenty of playoff experienced players where the Wings and the youth movement seem to love the opportunity to play and show they are up to the task. This one is going to be one to go down to the wire and in typical fashion I see a couple of overtime games in this series. Boston is strong but I see the Wings pulling the upset in 7.

King-I know alot of people are expecting this to be the one upset this year.  I mean, as PB pointed out, they were 3 to 1 winners in the regular season.  They are very similar in play.  I on the other hand believe this is the year that the “new guys” from Detroit learn their lesson of what the playoffs are all about….Bruins in 6

(2) TAM v (3) MON

PB- Too bad that Montreal pulled the Lightening in the first round. Oh wait I think that was a good thing for them. The bolts lost their goalie to the dreaded upper body injury even though it looked like he was shot in the leg. As much as I really like Stamkos the bolts just don’t have Stevie Y lacing up the skates and Marty is now on the Rangers. Leadership is lacking but the Canadians have a huge thing working for them a little hot streak and a great goalie in Price. Montreal in 6.

King – Montreal has been my “meh” team of the year.  I think they’re alright, but haven’t really done anything to make me say wow.  I do like the pick up of Vaneck although in his last playoffs he was -7 in 7 games.  Tampa has that something this year.  Everyone said, “they’ll crumble” when Stamkos went down…guess what, they still won.  Everyone said, “they’re crazy” when they traded away St. Louis…guess what, they continued to win.  I pick Tampa in 7

(1) PIT v (WC) CLB

PB- Hey Columbus welcome to the playoffs for the second time in your history. The Pens will welcome you with a solid effort and flopping flower (aka Fleury) will tighten up and play solid. The most important thing is the Pens have a lot of firepower and I just don’t see the Bluejackets able to match that scoring ability. Pains me to say this but the non-flying birds in 6.

King – I’m not that crazy about this round.  I think that Pittsburgh is happy they pulled Columbus and not Detroit, but I’m not too sure about that feeling.  Something in the gut tells me this is the one upset that happens every year.  Bobrovsky scares me as it seems he’s on his game and this is the time to do that.  Call me crazy…Columbus in 7

(2) NYR v (3) PHI

PB- This is will be the most hard hitting of the series in both Conferences. The Rangers are solid and have plenty of leadership and playoff experience to boot. The Flyers started really slow but built a solid season behind balance scoring and plenty of grit. The biggest “If” is if Henrik Lundqvist can stand on his head and take over a game or two. I love both teams but the magic eight ball says Rangers in 7 with 3 overtime games.

King – Ohhhh, this is match up I can’t wait to see.  Most people wrote off the Flyers after their horrible start, but man..they picked up their play so much.  The Rangers look sharp, but something about them seems alittle off.  I’m thinking if Mason can play out of his mind…which is a stretch but doable….UPDATE: Mason is now unavailable with an “upper body injury.”  I will still stick with my pick, but it just became alot harder! Flyers in 7

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “What the What?!?!” Edition

Hello friends it’s your friendly neighborhood PB bringing you this week’s Five Thoughts on a Friday. This week was a lot of fun with it being Halloween and all. Hope yours was not as soggy as ours. If you are wondering where Beer is well that is hard to say. Something about work and actually doing it to get paid or some damn thing like that, so here I am. Just like Huey Lewis and the News say working for a living right?

Let’s check out what we have going this week shall we?

  1. Like the title says this week is “What the What” and boy is this a doozy. If you wear a costume that says you are one thing, please don’t get arrested for doing it to someone else like let’s say your boyfriend. Just another example that alcohol can lead stupid people to do even more stupid things.
  2. Once in a while even in sports you can make a “What the What” moment. I have played various sports in my days and watched plenty more with friends but this one was truly a “OH HELL!!” moment. If you are a professional soccer player you know the rules buddy.
  3. This one is also from the ranks of too much alcohol can get you into places and situations that when you wake up you say “What the What?!?!?” I know that would be my reaction if I found myself being arrested as I woke up on the back of a horse
  4. This one is a story and non-story at the same time. The man at the center of this story has passed on. Good thing is they didn’t do to him like what he did to a dead whale back in 1970. How does this tie into the theme today you ask? He did what to what to a whale and it did what?!?! Thank you George for this moment most will never forget!
  5. This is what you don’t want to find when you are hunting ever. If you are in a tree stand and you shoot a deer wait a little longer to come down and check out your prize. If there is another buck hanging around and won’t leave when you come down, I would stay back and do not mess with that buck for sure!! Good thing these guys are quick.

Well folks that’s the Five Thoughts for this week. Hope you had a wonderful Halloween and received lots of treats and no tricks, unless you’re into that kinda thing. In honor of a ground breaking artist that passed this week we say thank you Lou Reed and see you on the Wild side.

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Weird, Gross, Painful, and Freekin’ Cool “Edition

Hello Folks! You guessed right it’s time for Five Thoughts on a Friday the PB edition. As you can tell from the title it will be the start of the annual October festivities of Halloween soon! I hope to entertain you and not in a scary way……..I hope. The bin is full of thrilling items so as Vincent Price said in a great 80’s song “It’s time for, the THRILLER!!!”

  1. This one is from the “Weird” file. I think we all at one time said I wish I could just disappear for a little while. There are even those times when in a fit of anger you may have said “DROP DEAD!” to someone you like or don’t like. But this guy takes it to a whole new level by wanting to come back from the dead? How does one handle it when a judge says “your dead honey.”
  2. This one is from the file marked “Cool”. For all of those kids that play with Hot Wheels cars love how they change colors this one is right in your wheel house. Sounds like they finally have it down to have your paint job change colors depending on the weather. TOO COOL!!
  3. This one comes from the file marked “Painful”. People tend to make mistakes when messing with drunk people. With that said doesn’t mess with a drunken lady with a hand grip like a vice especially when she is pissed off! Also don’t let her get a hold of the man parts because that will hurt! We all know how it ends when you start messing with Sasquatch
  4. From the files of “Gross” comes this dandy one. I don’t know what possesses people to do such things like not replacing the toilet paper roll when empty or let your pet stick its tongue in your mouth after knowing it uses it to lick parts on themselves. I still shake my head with at the thought of this. If you see something on the floor that resembles food and did not see someone put it there, why would you pick it up and eat it? I guess you can ask this TV weather guy and also enquire how the cat puke tasted. Yep you guess it he ate cat puke on LIVE TV?!?!
  5. Finally this is from the “FREEKIN’ COOL!!!!” file. Only in New York do they get such fun things happening. This one needs no introduction so ladies and gentleman………I give you………………..Sir Paul McCartney!!!!!!

Well all that’s that for this edition of Five Thoughts the PB edition. It is a wonderful sunny day here in Michigan so please get out and enjoy yourself. I feel a little old school Black Sabbath coming on. So in honor of the army getting closer to making this a reality, I know Ironman would be proud!

On behalf of Beer, The King and me PB, have a great weekend everyone!!

2013 2nd Round NHL Playoffs

What is the world coming to!!!  Maybe we should stop having guest picking series. Here is the outcome of the first round predictions:

  • PB- 4 correct
  • King- 4 correct
  • Cigars and Scotch -what the world…..6 correct???

I think something is wrong here, but to quote CigarsandScotch…”75% right in the first round!  Nailed the Western Conference and split the East.  Suck on that!!!”

So here we go with round 2:

(1) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (7) Ottawa Senators

PB – One of two 1 vs 7 matchups this playoff season. Guess what? I still hate Cindy Crosby  and think the team was more complete without him in the lineup. The Pens have a situation brewing if the Fleury meltdown is a sign of things to come. Vokoun is just good this could be a sweep but if he has a Fleury moment the Sens could take the series. Ottawa has something in the water up there as they have played well without their stars. Problem is…….well they are playing the Pens. I see this one as a tight series and sure will be entertaining for sure. Pens in 7 but I still hate Cindy!!!

King- So, I’m pretty impressed with the way the Sens handled Montreal.  I have to admit I didn’t see this one coming (obviously as you can see from my pick).  The bigger question is which goalie will show up for the Pens.  The one that stops pucks or the one that is ready for the gol season to start.  I’m also starting to believe in the power of the mustache.  I’m going against the grain here and I’m going Sens in 6

CigarsandScotch-The Battle of the Shortened Names, or the “Syd the Kid Media Extravaganza,” ends with a severe arse whoopin’ on the Sens.  They are impeached and sent packing. Penguins in 5.

(4) Boston Bruins vs. (6) New York Rangers

PB – Momentum is on the side of the team that won their game 7. UUummm well that would be both teams. The momentum is on the side of the team that finally found their scoring touch…..that would be both teams again. Damnit. Oh well both teams fought hard to make this round but I see one glaring problem in this series, Boston is almost bipolar. They are one team one night and another team the next. They have been really inconsistent and their pick up of Jagr well really has not paid off…..yet. Nash is good but he has never played this deep into the playoffs before and Boston has. Potential loss of Boychuk could be huge. Coin flip has Boston in 6

King – Living across the water from Windsor, which is no way near Toronto, I could still hear the gasp from the fans in Toronto about their team losing a game 7 in O/T after leading 4-1 in the 3rd period.  Yikes.  That being said, I’m not too sure I’m in love with the team the Bruins have become in the playoffs.  I’m no Rangers fan, but man, give credit where credit is due.  I didn’t think they had it in them to play good hockey and win the series against Washington. That being said, I’m going against my own heart and picking the Rangers in 7

CigarsandScotch- Old time hockey, coach!  Now we are talkin’.  None of this mamby pamby California-latte-drinking hockey.  This is what we call playoff hockey.  (Wings and Hawks, too!)  WE have big playoff beards and crushed cans of Hamms in the corner of the locker room.  Sticking with the original projection and taking the Bruins in 6.  (How can you not after they come back from 3 goals down!)

Western Conference Semifinals

(1) Chicago Blackhawks vs. (7) Detroit Red Wings

PB – One team is down right scary good this whole season. The Blackhawks have talent on all lines and they all contribute, two solid goaltenders, solid defense, and a coach that has won a Cup. That said the Wings have shown me something that I knew they had but they saved it for the playoffs and that is heart. Their best players needed to be at their best and they were. Howard is underrated in my opinion by those in the NHL so this is when he can make a name for himself and totally steal a series. I see this one of two ways it can go the way of the regular season and the Hawks sweep or they can go a tough 7 games. Split the difference and say the Hawks in 6.

King – Living in the Detroit market, I have to chuckle when the local fans were calling for Mrazek to be the starting goalie over Jimmy Howard.  I mean come on, Jimmy has played fantastic this playoff round and almost won it by himself.  He’s going to need to be that good or better for the Wings to make it through this round.  Although all games this season except for the Easter massacre was decided by overtime or shootout, I pick the Blackhawks in 7

CigarsandScotch-Ok, here is what is going to happen: Quenneville threatens his team by stating that he will “shave the stache'” with Stan Makita’s ’61 skates.”  The team rallies behind this threat.  The Wings respond with threats of limo rides down Woodward with Mr. Illitch at the wheel.  Hawks in 6.

(5) Los Angeles Kings vs. (6) San Jose Sharks

PB – Did the Sharks play in the first round? I didn’t even notice. They didn’t even break a sweat against the Canucks. I think they brought Jamie Baker out of retirement to score on the Canucks. The Kings proved they are still a tough hard nosed team that can grind out another cup if they keep this up. I don’t see a fun time for the Sharks in this battle of California. Just waiting for Joe Thornton to go all Joe Thornton and have one hell of a series…..NOT!! The Kings are solid and I see changes coming to the Sharks this off season. The Kings channel their inner purple sweaters and take this one and the Sharks don’t even know what hit them. Kings in 5

CigarsandScotch-The Battle of Cali! This is absurd.  California teams battling it out in the Stanley Cup playoffs.  Cats and Dogs sleeping together!  Mass Hysteria!  Sharks upend the defending champs in 6.

King- Seriously, did anyone think the Sharks were going to handle the Canucks the way they did?  I mean, I knew that that series was going to be a snoozer, but come on…  The Kings on the other hand remembered what it took to be winners and showed the Blues.  I’m hoping Quick learned his lesson about puck handling and plays like he did at the end of the series.  Kings in 6

There you have it folks.  I’m personally hoping I do a better job this round.  Also, it’s only fair since he had a great 1st round I leave you with another quote from Cigars and Scotch…

“Listen to Cigars and Scotch podcast or I’ll be bringing those Quenneville clippings over to your house for Sunday brunch!”

Five thoughts on a Friday – The “Back from the Lake” Edition

Howdy folks, and welcome back to another “Beer is fresh back from vacation and totally unprepared for this post” edition of Five Thoughts. So, having been honest and gotten that out of the way let’s see where we land this time. Shall we?

  1. Yesterday was a sad day for hockey fans in Detroit, as well as around the league. Nick Lidstrom has decided that 20 years is enough for people adding a gratuitous ‘n’ to his name and has called it a (very well distinguished) career. No more number 5 in the lineup for the Red Wings. If I can make one small suggestion for when they hang that number in the rafters…. Do it at the 5th home game of the year. (Why does my brain come up with stuff like that?)
  2. Like a lot of people – Beermaker did the road trip thing this past holiday weekend. Unlike a lot of people, I ended up in between two forest fires in northern Michigan over the weekend, one in the Seney wildlife refuge and the other being called the Duck Lake Fire. So, now I can cross that off a list that includes tornadoes, water spouts (that was actually pretty minor though) as well as a class three hurricane. So, who wants to come along on the next trip and see if anything else happens?
  3. Apparently today is National Doughnut Day. That means the chance to score a free doughnut! And no self respecting fan of Homer Simpson can let that go by without mentioning it. Or thinking of this video.
  4. Like just about everyone else on the planet, I heard about the “Naked man killed by police while eating another man’s face” story. And I was going to leave it alone. Too weird, too easy, too… eeeewww. Then I checked CNN this morning and find this headline…  Sheriff: Maryland student, 21, admits eating housemate’s heart, part of brain What the heck is wrong with these people?? I think maybe the zombie thing has finally maybe gone a bit too far.
  5. Lastly, I’m going to have a little fun at the expense of my co-blogger who fills in for me when I’m off on my boondoggles. You see, you can usually tell who’s writing any particular “Five Thoughts” post by the title. It’s pretty simple actually, because even though we base things off of the number five – this little feature isn’t about math. At least I don’t think it’s about math. Specifically, it isn’t about arithmetic. You see, it’s an “edition” of Five Thoughts not an “addition”. Because I’m pretty sure that would make it “Six Thoughts”.        Drum roll please!!

Okay folks, that’s five and I’ll try to do better next time. Unless I can con someone else into covering for me so I can be off on another boondoggle. In the meantime, one last story from the road. We awoke Saturday morning to a very calm setting. The winds were still and as a result there was a blanket of smoke that had descended on our location. Being as we were up at the lake, I took the opportunity to make a joke about what we were seeing. There was smoke… on the water. And the joke failed miserably. I need to upgrade my traveling companions knowledge of musical history, apparently. So for those who are still wondering what I’m going on about? Have you been living under a rock your whole life? I’m talking about Smoke on the Water!

Have a great weekend folks!
-Beer

Just in time for Whiskey Day! Another hockey post…

“Okay, Beer – Have you gone completely off your rocker this time?”

Nope, there’s a method theme madness to my madness. And no, I’m not talking about the final four coming up. Today is March 27th. World Whiskey Day (or Whisky, if you prefer). Why am I talking about it? Well, a) I like whiskey (whisky) and b) something impressive happened last night…

While my co-blogger was getting all misty eyed and emotional about how he loves hockey, the Detroit Red Wings punched their ticket to the playoffs.

“Big deal, they made the playoffs, so what?”

Simple, and this is probably a fact that even most die hard Hockeytown fans missed – they were too busy celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Red Wings/Avalanche brawl at Joe Louis arena (Video Here). Last night, in the state of Michigan anyone celebrating their 21st birthday could legally order a drink to celebrate last nights win and resulting playoff berth. Why is that significant?

Because that 21 year old person has never known the Detroit Red Wings to not be in the playoffs. This year’s appearance is the 21st consecutive playoff appearance for them. In modern sports, in an era of free agency and salary caps, that is an amazing feat. In any sport. And for reference, here’s how it stacks up against history.

How well will they do in the playoffs? Who knows. That’s not what I’m worried about right now. I’m just sitting here impressed. Barkeep, I’ll take another please… What have you got that’s 21 years old?

Later folks!

Bad day at the office?

So you wake up late because your stupid alarm clock didn’t go off. You step into your cold shower to realize that all you have left is one of those potato chip sized chucks of soap left. You then get stuck in traffic because someone didn’t realize the lane ended as they were texting. Finally, you go to grab a pot of coffee only to learn that the person before you drank the last drip of coffee. Yeah, you know it’s going to be a bad day at work. But at least you don’t have to worry about getting run over by a freight train when you do your job!!! So smile!
