Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Charcoal Gray” Edition

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all survived and enjoyed turkey day yesterday. I’ll do my best to keep it quick and light-hearted this week, in an effort to get finished up before I slip back into a turkey induced coma. So with that in mind, let’s get at it, shall we?

  1. Is it really appropriate to call today black Friday anymore? It seems to me that the name, which originally came from this being they day when brick and mortar retailers would see their stores reach the point of profitability for the year (Which would be shown in black ink rather than red for showing a loss), hence the name. With the sales starting earlier and earlier now, I just don’t see the connection anymore. Ah well…. maybe I’m just getting too old.
  2. It is now officially acceptable to not only have Christmas decorations up, but to turn them on at night in my world. And for the record the earliest official time it’s acceptable in my world occurs just after sundown on Thanksgiving. I think it goes back to when I was growing up, and we’d be watching the Cowboys game at grandma’s house. At some point during that game, Norelco would run an ad with Santa Claus using the top of an electric razor as a sled. And that came to signal that it was Christmas time to me.
  3. Now, I’m gonna say this up front. I didn’t go out shopping yesterday. We aren’t going out shopping today, either. But for everyone yelling about places being open and available to shop – deal with it. You’re in the minority. We live in a democratic republic, and people have voted… with their wallets. Maybe it has something to do with their being fewer shopping days this year. I don’t know. I know you won’t get me to go out in that madness, but obviously enough people will to make it worthwhile for stores to be open. So that’s that.
  4. On a more cheerful note if you happen to be from my neck of the woods – we got to see something from a group that works every single Thanksgiving day that we haven’t seen in a decade. The Detroit Lions won a game on Thanksgiving for the first time since 2003! And for that, I am thankful!
  5. Lastly, it’s not a post from me without some sort of random geek type news, and this one is no different. Again, these are here because I think a story about how a comet basically appears to have burned up while flying too close to the sun is cool. If you’ll pardon the pun.

Okay folks, that’s a quick five thoughts on black Friday and I’m off to get back to work. Which in this case means I’m off to make a turkey and swiss omelet. In the meantime, considering I did wake up to snow on the ground yesterday… It is now time to bust these out. After all, it did sorta look like a Marshmallow World.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “What the What?!?!” Edition

Hello friends it’s your friendly neighborhood PB bringing you this week’s Five Thoughts on a Friday. This week was a lot of fun with it being Halloween and all. Hope yours was not as soggy as ours. If you are wondering where Beer is well that is hard to say. Something about work and actually doing it to get paid or some damn thing like that, so here I am. Just like Huey Lewis and the News say working for a living right?

Let’s check out what we have going this week shall we?

  1. Like the title says this week is “What the What” and boy is this a doozy. If you wear a costume that says you are one thing, please don’t get arrested for doing it to someone else like let’s say your boyfriend. Just another example that alcohol can lead stupid people to do even more stupid things.
  2. Once in a while even in sports you can make a “What the What” moment. I have played various sports in my days and watched plenty more with friends but this one was truly a “OH HELL!!” moment. If you are a professional soccer player you know the rules buddy.
  3. This one is also from the ranks of too much alcohol can get you into places and situations that when you wake up you say “What the What?!?!?” I know that would be my reaction if I found myself being arrested as I woke up on the back of a horse
  4. This one is a story and non-story at the same time. The man at the center of this story has passed on. Good thing is they didn’t do to him like what he did to a dead whale back in 1970. How does this tie into the theme today you ask? He did what to what to a whale and it did what?!?! Thank you George for this moment most will never forget!
  5. This is what you don’t want to find when you are hunting ever. If you are in a tree stand and you shoot a deer wait a little longer to come down and check out your prize. If there is another buck hanging around and won’t leave when you come down, I would stay back and do not mess with that buck for sure!! Good thing these guys are quick.

Well folks that’s the Five Thoughts for this week. Hope you had a wonderful Halloween and received lots of treats and no tricks, unless you’re into that kinda thing. In honor of a ground breaking artist that passed this week we say thank you Lou Reed and see you on the Wild side.

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Weird, Gross, Painful, and Freekin’ Cool “Edition

Hello Folks! You guessed right it’s time for Five Thoughts on a Friday the PB edition. As you can tell from the title it will be the start of the annual October festivities of Halloween soon! I hope to entertain you and not in a scary way……..I hope. The bin is full of thrilling items so as Vincent Price said in a great 80’s song “It’s time for, the THRILLER!!!”

  1. This one is from the “Weird” file. I think we all at one time said I wish I could just disappear for a little while. There are even those times when in a fit of anger you may have said “DROP DEAD!” to someone you like or don’t like. But this guy takes it to a whole new level by wanting to come back from the dead? How does one handle it when a judge says “your dead honey.”
  2. This one is from the file marked “Cool”. For all of those kids that play with Hot Wheels cars love how they change colors this one is right in your wheel house. Sounds like they finally have it down to have your paint job change colors depending on the weather. TOO COOL!!
  3. This one comes from the file marked “Painful”. People tend to make mistakes when messing with drunk people. With that said doesn’t mess with a drunken lady with a hand grip like a vice especially when she is pissed off! Also don’t let her get a hold of the man parts because that will hurt! We all know how it ends when you start messing with Sasquatch
  4. From the files of “Gross” comes this dandy one. I don’t know what possesses people to do such things like not replacing the toilet paper roll when empty or let your pet stick its tongue in your mouth after knowing it uses it to lick parts on themselves. I still shake my head with at the thought of this. If you see something on the floor that resembles food and did not see someone put it there, why would you pick it up and eat it? I guess you can ask this TV weather guy and also enquire how the cat puke tasted. Yep you guess it he ate cat puke on LIVE TV?!?!
  5. Finally this is from the “FREEKIN’ COOL!!!!” file. Only in New York do they get such fun things happening. This one needs no introduction so ladies and gentleman………I give you………………..Sir Paul McCartney!!!!!!

Well all that’s that for this edition of Five Thoughts the PB edition. It is a wonderful sunny day here in Michigan so please get out and enjoy yourself. I feel a little old school Black Sabbath coming on. So in honor of the army getting closer to making this a reality, I know Ironman would be proud!

On behalf of Beer, The King and me PB, have a great weekend everyone!!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Brewing Black Friday” Edition

Good morning everyone, and welcome to a another off the wall edition of five thoughts. Odds are most of you are (Or already done with) shopping at the moment – me, no shopping here. I’m hoping to see red by the end of the day, not black. Red as in red ale – which is what I’m off brewing as you’re likely reading this. So, since we all have other things to get done today let get started!

  1.  A lot of ends seem to once popular things lately. Even thought it looked like it would live up to its famous reputation and prove nothing can kill a Twinkie when a judge ordered mediation for Hostess, it sadly didn’t work and Hostess will now go out of business (Trust me though, the Twinkie isn’t going anywhere – someone will get the iconic junk food back on the market)
  2. Turns out the end has come for the show “Dirty Jobs” as well. I just wonder – who got the “dirty job” of telling the host of Dirty Jobs that the show was being cancelled? And still, while I’m sure no one likes to be told their show has been cancelled, Mike Rowe is probably privately happy to not have to be dealing with poop on a regular basis for the show anymore.
  3. So as I said earlier, no shopping for me today (Other than needing to run out and get some more coffee for the house later today). I’m happily making beer and avoiding the crazies crowds. Now, I know there are some “deals” to be had – but can we honestly discuss one question here? If you had to take 2 days off of work, camp out, and miss Thanksgiving dinner, all in the name of saving a couple hundred dollars on a TV… how much did you really cost yourself?
  4. Ah, Florida. You’ve given us so much. Including this wonderful vehicle, and the debate about it that followed.
We really might need to consider making you your own country, or something.
  5. It is the day after Thanksgiving. As of sundown last night, it is now officially acceptable to play Christmas music and turn on all the lights. That is all.

Okay folks, that’s a quick five thoughts, and I need to go check on the beer that’s currently mashing in. Have a great day! And since I did say that it was officially Christmas Time.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “This Might Sound Mean” Edition

Good morning folks, and welcome to yet another Friday where we ramble on about random things. Now, I don’t want to go all Dennis Miller and get on a rant here today, but fair warning. Today might be a bit feistier than normal. I had the “good fortune” to go grocery shopping the other day, and I knew it was time for a refresher course on some things before I even got through the parking lot. So.. here we go!

  1. Folks, there are laws.. and then there are Laws. The former are arbitrary man made legislation. Don’t speed, stop at stop lights, that type of stuff. There other is science related. It’s known as a law because it’s been proven repeatedly to be true. It’s your basic “If x, then y” type of thing. Why do I mention this? Because the amount of people meandering through the parking lot, walking out in front of moving vehicles without even looking is staggering. Folks, take the phone out of your ear. Stop yammering to the person next to you and look where you’re going. Don’t give me this “Oh, they’ll stop” BS or claim the right of way. Because here’s where the difference in laws and Laws comes into play. The laws of whatever great state you live may say something along the lines of “A pedestrian in a crosswalk shall be given the right of way”, and that is the arbitrary man made law. However, Mr. Issac Newton discovered some other Laws. They’re known as the Laws of physics. And you know what, when you step off that curb into your crosswalk right in front of several thousand pounds of moving metal? We can put “Had the right of way on your gravestone. Physics don’t lie folks. The moving metal (aka a car, truck, bus, etc.) has the right of way. It’s going to win that fight. Every time. So, don’t be stupid. It will hurt.
  2. Speaking of people being stupid…..  I barely even know where to start with this one. It seems the second-in-command of New Mexico’s domestic security agency was caught trying to bring a loaded gun through an airport security checkpoint in Albuquerque.
Let’s start with the obvious… the “I forgot to leave it home” defense. Okay, I’m sorry you were going to a funeral and you say you were ‘distraught’ but you do not FORGET about a gun in your possession. I fly a fair amount every year. I remember not to pack the little pocket knife I have when I go to the airport. I’d damn sure remember a freaking GUN!! Especially when you work as a freaking security official! My favorite line from the article though? “Airport police chief Marshall Katz says he’s not sure how a person of Tallarico’s position could make such a slip-up, but added that it happens frequently nationwide.” Well, yes and no. Lots of idiots ahem, people, try to bring guns through checkpoints. Not a lot of security agency officials do it! Lady… Here’s your sign…
  3. Staying on the subject of guns… and stupidity… I think the phrase that applies here would be “This Will Not End Well”. As much of a fan of bars/taverns/drinking as I am, even I question the sanity of wanting to open a bar and gun range. This is not Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. This is not two things that go great together.
  4. This is not stupid. Hot on the heels of the news that former first overall pick in the NFL draft Vince Young is bankrupt, this young man is smart. Alfred Morris is a rookie with the Washington Redskins. And he’s still driving his 1991 Mazda. I’m not saying the man doesn’t deserve an upgrade if he wants one, but after hearing so many stories about players being bad with their money, it’s nice hearing one about a player being smart with his money. Even (especially?) at the start of his career.
  5. And lastly, we go from an uplifting story about a young man being smart with his money, to a story about some people getting held up. Literally! Now, I’m not afraid of heights, and I really wouldn’t have much of a problem being stuck up there at first. But the article notes that they were stuck up there for four hours. And what worries me is that “when you gotta go…”. Yeah.

Okay folks, that’s five and I’ve ranted, cajoled, congratulated, and made fun of enough stuff for one week, I think.  And since I’m getting static for taking too long to get this post put up this week, I’ll cut it short and close out. Time for the weekend! On the way out, let’s pull one from the obscure “Beer, how in the hell do you remember these things?” pile of new wave music. Nemesis.

Have a great weekend folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – “The Christmas Eve, Eve” Edition

Howdy folks and welcome to the last Five thoughts before Christmas. It’s pretty quiet here today, so I’m just going to jump right in.

  1. Off on break for the holidays, and since it’s the night before the night before Christmas. I think I’m going to keep this one short this week.
  2. It’s the holidays, and we’re all eating too much, aren’t we? I know I am. It always seems like the office has a magic tub of Christmas cookies this time of year. No matter how many cookies people eat, it’s still got cookies in it!
  3. I still need to finish up Christmas shopping for one person. Other than that, I’m done. And I’ll be heading out to finish that bit of shopping here shortly. Hope everyone else is in good shape too.
  4. I always wonder on a day like today. Knowing that you’ll be overeating tomorrow…. Do you try to go light today, and save room or do you go big, and try to get “warmed up” for the next day? Decisions, decisions….
  5. Lastly, but certainly not least I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. And if you don’t celebrate Christmas? Have a Merry Christmas anyways. Why? Because if you do, you’ll at least have a nice day. And everyone deserves one of those every now and then, especially this time of year. I think so, at least.

Okay, that’s five and I’m off to start the holidays and finish my shopping! Now, if only we could do something about the fact that’s I’m still looking at my lawn and not the white stuff that’s supposed to be on the ground this time of year.

Merry Christmas folks!

Five Thoughts on a Friday – The “Christmas Vacation” edition

Merry Christmas folks!
It’s Friday! It’s Christmas Eve! It’s….. Christmas Vacation!

Still, here we are merrily posting away because it’s what we do. So, let’s get started, shall we?

  1. Now that the shopping is over, I have a suggestion for some of you stores… if you want to lock up the video games, that’s fine. I can see the little sign there that says “Please ask an associate for assistance”. You know what I don’t see though? One of your associates! They’re nowhere to be found! So I can’t buy the game from you. Here, let me translate that for you….  YOU ARE MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR ME TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY! As a business, that’s a bad thing! You need to fix that.
  2. Last weekend was the last Saturday before Christmas. And what did old Beermaker do? He went and saw Yogi Bear. In 3-D. I thought it was pretty good. I mean, it’s based on a cartoon who’s premise was a bear stealing picnic baskets; so if you’re looking for some involved or meaningful plot…   yeah. It’s Yogi. And Boo-Boo. And Ranger Smith. And it was good for a laugh. That’s all it needs to be.
  3. I’ve been listening to a lot of Christmas music at work this week. I look at it this way… The week before Christmas it’s almost unavoidable, so you might as well embrace it. My Co-blogger wants to ban A particular Christmas song by Wham! that he insists is overplayed. Kind of scrooge like, don’t you think? I mean, it’s only ONE song. And even Bob Geldof has called his Band Aid effort one of the worst songs of all time, but it still gets played. Ok, may not scrooge. How about Grinch?
  4. Why is that whenever this time of year rolls around, I always think about how nice it will be to have a few days off to relax when I know full well I’ll be running around busier than I usually am the rest of the year? I never learn.  I have learned one thing over the years though. Despite my best efforts, I’m horrible at wrapping gifts. Thank God for gift bags!
  5. In case you hadn’t guessed by now, I pre-wrote this column. I hope that as you read this, your either enjoying a little a bit of quiet time before heading out for the holiday or you’re catching up after the fact. Either way, I’d like to wish a very Merry Christmas to everyone from us here at The Beerbarrel. No matter what your beliefs, enjoy the day and enjoy the time. I hope you have a great one.

Ok folks. That’s Five Gol-den rings! (Sorry, force of habit this time of year, you know?) and we’re off to enjoy the holiday. Since today’s post was the “Christmas Vacation” edition because, well, it’s Christmas Vacation… There really was only one choice to close out with… (The video isn’t from the movie, but the song is)

Merry Christmas folks!
